General Motors Tonawanda Plant

The GM Tonawanda plant, officially known as GM Tonawanda Engine Plant or GM Tonawanda Powertrain, is located in Buffalo, New York, USA. The plant is located across from the Niagara River and currently operates three plants that produce engines for various General Motors vehicles.

  • Ecotec engine family:
    • Ecotec 2.5L I4 LCV used in: Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Impala, GMC Acadia, Cadillac ATS (2013-2017 model years)
    • Turbocharged Ecotec 2.0L I4 LTG used in: Chevrolet Camaro, Malibu; Buick Regal, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Cadillac ATS, CTS, CT6 (2016-2018 model years), CT6 Plug-In, Chevrolet Traverse (2018 and newer)
  • LT engine family:
    • 6.2L LT1 V8 used in Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Corvette Grand Sport, Chevrolet Camaro
    • Supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 used in: Cadillac CTS-V.
      • The same engine is used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE… but these engines are built at the Performance Build Center co-located at the GM Bowling Green Plant
  • EcoTec3 engine family:
    • 4.3L V6 LV1 used in Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana (2018 model year and newer)
    • 4.3L V6 LV3 used in Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500
    • 5.3L V8 L83 used in Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL
    • 6.2L V8 L86 used in Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe Performance Package, GMC Yukon Denali, GMC Yukon XL Denali, Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV

Investments

  • 2016: $295.9 million for future engine production
  • 2010: GM awards Tonawanda Engine two new product lines:
    • $425 million for the next Generation Ecotec 2.0:/2.5L
    • $400 million for a new V8 small block engine

Including the above 2010 announcements, GM has invested $2.9 billion into the Tonawanda Engine plant over the past decade.
