GM is continuing a 16-year tradition with the ability to track Santa Claus’s flight through Christmas Eve via OnStar. However, it comes with a new twist for 2024. This year, you can actually talk to Santa himself.
Tracking and communication with Santa are possible through OnStar’s collaboration with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which provides an annual Santa tracker. OnStar subscribers can push the blue OnStar button now through December 24th to see what Santa is up to and talk to him directly. It’s unclear at this time whether up-to-date information on the naughty and nice lists is available to the public.
OnStar subscribers can also find Santa on the OnStar Guardian app. Just click the Santa hat icon in the app to track Santa’s location, even when you’re not in your car.
GM uses this as an opportunity for philanthropy by donating $1 to the American Red Cross for every request to follow Santa Claus. It set a limit of $30,000 in the U.S. and $5,000 in Canada.
GM is also imagining what Santa’s sleigh would be like with a “GM Technology makeover.” “If Santa’s sleigh was equipped with GM’s built-in infotainment system, he could rely on a perfectly optimized Christmas EVe route, stopping at every chimney right on time,” GM said in a statement. “The navigation system could analyze variables like flying style (Dasher’s speed versus Blitzen’s power), weather conditions and more, providing updates to his route in real time for faster, more efficient gift delivery.” GM also imagines the usefulness of OnStar turn-by-turn navigation and in-sleigh Wi-Fi as well as Super Cruise when making his rounds in the U.S., Canada, and China.
The official NORAD Santa Tracker doesn’t go live until Christmas Eve, but OnStar subscribers can still speak with Santa in the meantime. There’s also a “NORAD Tracks Santa” mobile app available, which includes games and stories while you await the big day.
