In motorsport, a tenth of a second can make all the difference, and every possible advantage should be explored. With that in mind, GM is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to elevate its performance on the track, including in NASCAR and IndyCar. And while racing remains a human-driven sport, AI is quickly becoming an essential component of GM’s strategy, allowing teams to stay informed and make faster decisions, both on and off the track.
As GM points out, the sheer volume of real-time data pouring out of modern race cars can be overwhelming, from car performance, to driver feedback, to track conditions. Compiling and analyzing that mountain of data can often be too much for a human – and that’s where AI steps in. At GM’s Charlotte Technical Center, AI is used to sift through a massive amounts of information in a split second, providing the most relevant data to team members as needed and making real-time data processing more efficient.
Among the AI tools at GM’s disposal is an ability to instantly transcribe drivers’ radio communications, even amidst the background noise of a hot track. Because off-the-shelf transcription software struggled to handle the technical jargon and background noise of racing, GM developed its own AI transcription tool, enabling engineers to track driver feedback more accurately. AI is also used to monitor telemetry data in races where car-to-pit communication is allowed. This data includes fuel consumption, tire wear, and other critical metrics to help determine the best time for a pit stop.
In addition, AI can help teams assess vehicle damage. During races, team photographers shoot images of the cars as they pass by, capturing any visible damage. AI software quickly analyzes these images, identifying potential issues or confirming that the vehicle is still race-ready, allowing teams to avoid unnecessary pit stops and save precious time.
While we’re still a ways off from robot-driven race cars, AI tools are playing an increasingly important role in GM’s motorsport efforts, and ultimately, may help to decide which team comes out on top.
