The LS-based small-block engine family is nothing short of legendary, generating its own series of memes as the go-to power plant for all manner of applications. As it turns out, those applications include prototype military vehicles, as seen in the following feature video showcasing Eli Goldsmith’s Project Hyena.
The video is about two minutes and 44 seconds in length, and captures the customized off-roader as it attacks a dirt track at LS Fest West.
Eli Goldsmith started Project Hyena after acquiring a prototype military vehicle in a very basic state. When he first got it, the vehicle was essentially just a collection of parts amassed on a series of pallets. However, Eli and his team have managed to transform the vehicle it into a formidable off-roader capable of tackling just about any terrain.
The vehicle was originally equipped with a VM Motori R428 turbodiesel engine, the same power plant shared by the Jeep Liberty, as well as a TH400 transmission and an Atlas transfer case. Over time, Eli and his team upgraded the vehicle significantly, notably swapping in the 6.0L Vortec L96 engine. The TH400 transmission was also replaced with the 6L90 transmission, a setup used in HD trucks, SUVs, and vans between 2010 and 2020. The Atlas transfer case was retained.
Originally built for Special Forces under the Guardian Angel contract, this military vehicle was designed for combat search and rescue operations, with seating for five people and a quartet of gun mounts. Modifications for Project Hyena included removal of the rear seat to make room for a fuel cell and relocating the middle seat to accommodate the new LS engine.
Project Hyena has been in development for a year and four months, with LS Fest West marking its first official outing. Despite its bare-bones setup – lacking proper gauges and featuring minimalistic controls – the military vehicle performed impressively, handling the rugged terrain with ease.
Eli’s future plans for Project Hyena include participating in prestigious off-road racing events like King of the Hammers, the Mint 400, and potentially Baja races.
