GM and EVgo To Add 400 EV Fast Charging Stations Across The U.S.

As GM Authority has covered extensively in the past, a dearth of public chargers remains one of the biggest barriers to widespread EV adoption. As such, GM has partnered with electric vehicle charging solutions company EVgo to help build out the national charging network and offer GM EV customers additional charging options. Now, GM and EVgo have announced a new expansion to the existing network with the addition of 400 new EV fast charging stalls across the U.S.

The new stalls will include 350 kW outlets and a range of customer-centric amenities, including “ample lighting, canopies, pull-through stations and security cameras,” per GM. The first of these new flagship charging locations is slated to open next year.

“The future of EV charging is larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and designing around features that customers love – such as pull-through access, canopies and convenient amenities,” said the president at EVgo, Dennis Kish. “Through this next evolution of EVgo and GM’s esteemed collaboration, the future of EV charging is here. In order to be the charging provider of choice, we need to lead on customer satisfaction, and we will continue to innovate to deliver a charging experience that is convenient, comfortable, and dependable for current and future EV drivers.”

The majority of the new flagship stations will be located in metropolitan areas in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas, and will include upwards of 20 charging stalls or more, all located near amenities like shopping, dining, and coffee shops.

Construction of the new charging stations will leverage Evgo’s prefabrication approach, which is expected to reduce station construction costs by an average of 15 percent and reduce installation timelines by as much as 50 percent.

In addition to these new flagship locations, GM and EVgo continue to build out the metropolitan charging footprint with plans to construct 2,850 DC fast charging stalls, recently celebrating the opening of their 1,000th stall in August of 2023. The 2,000th stall is expected to open by the end of the year.

A recent study found that 47 U.S. states fall short of the optimal charger-to-electric-vehicle ratio. According to GM CEO Mary Barra, the EV transition is expected to take decades, and the automaker recently announced the reintroduction of plug-in hybrid models to its North American lineup to help bridge the gap to full electrification in the midst of the developing public charging infrastructure.

  1. This makes me wonder if it’s going to be like the Tesla partnership with BK World. If it isn’t then it needs to be.

  2. Problem with the FLYING J – PILOT locations is that about 1/2 of them say “This EVGO location is not honoring EVGO special programs”. On the plus side – there are plenty of locations, with 2 dual cord sharing dispensers, and the free charging is soon to be a thing of the past anyway at GM.

So forget about using your unlimited 2 year free fast charging (for 2023 and 2024 LYRIQs only) at those locations.

  3. So there are no human beings on site like a gas station?
What’s to keep the street deuggie/punks from vandalizing the charging stations, especially at night ?

    1. People always get all their panties in a bunch over this stuff.

I for one don’t care about the FLYING J- PILOT truck stop locations for the EVGO added chargers since I’d rarely use them….Most people charge at home and only use public charging during extended vacations.

The stations being built are apparently FOR PROFIT installations from private franchisees. You could make the argument that GM shouldn’t be subsidizing this , but you yourself said its only 8 per state so the cost is only pennies to GM.

Nothing to lose any sleep over.

Since only a minority of people probably will ever drive electrics they don’t need that many chargers for vacation travel.
