Former Visa CEO Joins GM Board Of Directors

GM has announced that Alfred Kelly, a former Chairman and CEO of Visa, has joined its Board of Directors.

Kelly served as Visa CEO from 2016 to 2023, and was elected as Chairman of the company’s board back in 2019. From there, he became Visa Executive Chair in 2023, and eventually retired from the Visa board in January 2024.

When factoring in Kelly, General Motors’ board of directors now counts 13 members, with experience that ranges across manufacturing, information technology, digital commerce, defense, transportation, and cybersecurity disciplines, among other fields. Additionally, six of The General’s directors are women, while 12 are independent.

“Al Kelly’s incredible financial, tech, and consumer insights are a great complement to GM’s board as we unlock new growth opportunities in electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and software and services,” General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra noted.

While at Visa – a world leader in digital payments – Kelly helped to initiate a period of unprecedented technological change, driving significant global growth and positioning the company for long-term leadership in financial and technology services.

Before joining Visa, Kelly served in numerous leadership roles with similar companies. One such venture was at American Express, where he served as President before leaving in 2010, as well as a stint with the New York-New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee where he served as President and CEO. In regard to his current positions, Kelly serves as the Board Chair of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, a member of the Board of Trustees of Boston College, Iona University, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Seminary and College, and as an Advisory Director at Berkshire Partners.

“This is an exciting time for GM as it leverages technology to innovate and deliver new experiences for its customers,” Alfred Kelly remarked in a prepared statement. “I look forward to serving GM’s shareholders and working with my fellow directors to help the company achieve its vision.”
