Two Former GM Execs Get Promotions At ExxonMobil

Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil has announced the retirement of Liam Mallon after 34 years with the company, effective February 1, 2025. Mallon will be replaced by two former GM executives, Dan Ammann and Barry Engle. Mallon’s two job titles are ExxonMobil Upstream Company president and ExxonMobil Corporation vice president. ExxonMobil Upstream Company makes up the bulk of the corporation’s business with oil exploration, extraction, shipping, and wholesaling.

“We thank Liam for his long-standing, dedicated service to the company, and we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement,” said Darren Woods, Chairman and CEO.

Dan Ammann will take over as ExxonMobil Upstream Company president. Barry Engle will become ExxonMobil Corporation vice president, but he will continue in his current role of Low Carbon Solutions president, which he has held since 2022.

“These appointments continue the company’s approach of leveraging the diverse skills and experiences of a very accomplished executive team to bring fresh perspectives and approaches to each of our exceptionally talented organizations,” said Woods. “This has served us well over the last several years and is a useful, innovative way to strengthen our leadership teams, challenge conventions, and broaden our people.”

Dan Ammann joined GM as treasurer in 2010 following the company’s high-profile bankruptcy. He quickly rose to CFO in 2011 and president in 2014. After helping to guide GM’s acquisition of Cruise, he became the self-driving subsidiary’s CEO in 2019, where he stayed until 2021. At the time, we reported that Ammann was dismissed by GM CEO Mary Barra due to a disagreement on the direction of Cruise.

Barry Engle joined ExxonMobil more recently in September 2024. He served as the executive vice president and president of GM North America from November 2019 until July 2020. Before that, he was executive vice president and president of GM Americas from April 2019 to October 2019. He held numerous executive positions during his tenure with the company, which began when he took over as executive vice president and president for South America in September 2015.
