Before the Chevy Silverado MD truck held the position as General Motors’ Medium Duty offering, the Chevy Kodiak and GMC Topkick served in that role for nearly 30 years. As a workhorse product, the MD trucks aren’t typically the first vehicles to come to mind for those looking to create a custom build, but nonetheless, check out this mashup of a 1991 GMC Topkick and a custom Chevy Suburban body.
Listed for sale on social media in the Topeka, Kansas area, this monstrosity is certainly unique. The seller notes that the truck is now capable of towing a double wide house and five children all at the same time, and features cold air conditioning. In addition, the seller also claims that this combination checks the box in the coolness category.
Of course, no vehicle is perfect and this Topkick is no exception. The seller notes that the ride could be described as rough due to the leaf spring suspension setup, while the dash remains inoperable. Additionally, five miles per gallon isn’t what would typically be considered efficient, while a top speed of 65 mph with a tailwind also isn’t entirely appealing. However, it’s worth noting that a single 50-gallon gas tank is present and accounted for, which allows for an estimated range of 250 miles on a full tank.
Moving into the powertrain, we find a Caterpillar 3116 engine. This turbocharged diesel powerplant is good for peak power levels of 205 horsepower at 2,400 rpm and 350 horsepower at 2,800 rpm. Designed primarily for marine applications, the seller notes that the engine runs great and has no issues with the drivetrain. Speaking of which, this Topkick/Suburban fusion features a five-speed manual transmission and a two-speed rear differential.
Interestingly, the CAT 3116 weights approximately 1,500 pounds, or roughly half of an entire Corvette C6 Z06.
