As they say, looks can be deceiving. Indeed, between the “rusty” exterior and luggage strapped to the roof, this 1967 Chevelle wagon looks like an old family beater with big wheels, rather than a serious performance machine. However, as soon as the go-pedal hits the carpet, this long-roof Chevy lays it down thick thanks to a Small Block V8 huffing nitrous, as seen in the following video feature.
Coming to us from AutotopiaLA, the video highlights another build from the folks at Hood Muscle Cars, who nicknamed this particular sleeper “Rusty” for its unique faux-rusty exterior, a wrap that was added to intentionally make the car look weathered.
The Chevelle is powered by a Small Block V8 stroker, specifically a 396 with upgraded heads, a roller camshaft, and a 750 CFM Holley carburetor. The engine builder, Sammy, estimates output at 600 horsepower at the flywheel, but can reach up to 900 horsepower with nitrous. The car also features a fully built 4L60 transmission, which was upgraded with a 2,600-stall converter.
The video highlights the Chevelle and its specs, but also the collaborative nature of the Hood Muscle Cars crew, with different members contributing to the build. Lonnie, for example, discusses the challenges of tuning the transmission and optimizing the car for racing. Despite the car’s aggressive setup, it retains its stock frame. The suspension geometry is stock as well, with factory components replaced with new QA1 coilovers.
Interestingly, the interior remains stock as well, adding to the sleeper appeal.
Towards the end of the video, the video host takes a ride in the Chevelle, experiencing firsthand its raw power and tire-shredding capability. This wagon can move, and looks like a handful to drive.
