Based on the preceding GMC Syclone turbocharged pickup truck, the GMC Typhoon featured a similar ethos wrapped in an SUV body style. Only produced across two model years, the Typhoon embarrassed many high-performance vehicles of its day, so what with that in mind, Mattel is releasing an RLC Exclusive 1992 GMC Typhoon.
Launching today at noon EST for $25, this 1:64 scale model features a Spectraflame true black paint job, five-spoke Real Riders wheels, a full metal chassis, light smoke-tinted windows, and a cool gray interior colorway. Additionally, the hood pops open to reveal the turbocharged powerplant hiding underneath.
It’s worth noting that Mattel has implemented a limit of two purchases per customer. In addition, Mattel notes that items and dates are subject to change at any time, and that items in shopping carts are not guaranteed to be available for purchase.
For background on the GMC Typhoon itself, this turbocharged SUV following in the footsteps of the aforementioned GMC Syclone. Just like the turbocharged pickup truck, the Typhoon boasted the 4.3L V6 LB4 gasoline engine, force-fed by a Mitsubishi turbocharger and intercooler strapped on. In order to handle the extra boost, the 4.3L LB4 featured special pistons, main caps, head gaskets, intake manifolds, fuel system and exhaust manifolds, all of which helped the Typhoon produce 280 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque.
This power was directed to all four wheels via the GM four-speed automatic transmission, where up to 65 percent of output was sent to the rear wheels.
During independent testing, the GMC Typhoon was capable of hitting 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 95 mph. As such, many publications found the Typhoon’s performance comparable to that of the Ferrari 348ts, Chevy Corvette and Nissan 300ZX Turbo, yet still criticized its plastic interior bits. Notably, pricing started in the $29,000 range.

Although this is a scaled model, GMC must produce a new Typhoon based on the Ultium platform to compete against the Ford F-150 Lightning as the real Typhoon did in the past.
I’m not sure that a Blazer scale vehicle will perform differently than a Hummer or if the big Ultium battery pack will fit in a Blazer SDS (Super Duper Sport).
The Ultium platform is modular to fit different sizes. The battery pack on the Hummer Truck has 24 battery modules and the SUV has 20. They plan to scale it to all sizes. Wouldn’t be an issue.
Just need to put the CT4-V Blackwing Twin Turbo motor in the Acadia. Keep it ICE, No electric at all
Already sold out in less than 24 hrs
Yeah, unfortunately you really need to be on the Mattel mailing list, and then be ready to buy as soon as the listing goes live. I respectfully picked up two of these when they were released at noon on Tuesday.
