1958 Chevy Impala Convertible Headed To Auction In Monterey

As part of its celebration of its fiftieth year of vehicle production, General Motors debuted the 1958 Chevy Impala. The Impala was part of the flagship Bel Air line and Chevy‘s prestige passenger car. Available as either a convertible or coupe, the Impala was built on GM’s Safety Girder X-Frame, which had been introduced the year before on Cadillac models. The Impala was distinguished from the rest of the Bel Air line by its longer wheelbase, lower roofline, and triple taillights.

The 1958 Chevy Impala could be had with a number of different engines and transmissions. The base Impala came with a standard inline six-cylinder, but those hungry for more power could select one of several available 283 Small Blocks fed by either carburetion or Rochester mechanical fuel injection or an optional 348 cube Turbo Thrust W-Head Big Block that could produce up to 315 horsepower.

Powering the 1958 Chevy Impala is a rebuilt 348 W-Head Big Block that has been extensively reworked. The engine has been bored .030 over; the heads have been milled, and the four-barrel carb has been rebuilt, as has the 350 Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission and the 3.36 rear differential. A Desert Cooler radiator keeps everything cool. The bumpers, window frames, hood bar, and parking light housings have all been re-chromed, and the stainless rocker moldings are new. The Impala rolls on painted steel wheels with full wheel covers and Coker wide whitewall radial tires. Full restoration documentation is included in the sale.

  2. The styling was all new in 1958, yet abandoned at the end of the model year and replaced by the all new, kitschy ’59s.

  6. This is when cars had personality of their own. Not like the modern day cookie cutter models they make now.

    1. I haven’t seen them at the same time, but it seems that the profiles of the current Malibu, Ford Fusion, and the (now out of production) Chrysler 200 are very close to one another.

  7. guys are in facebook groups reinventing style and GM should do equal, take a picture of these and with AI relaunch the cars, because what is offered in streets and what industry is doings seems they do not know how to do cars anymore. >>> main point see from this elegant interior a splendous car does not need wood at all to be beautiful and comfortable for eyes and for feelings >>> other point, me miss the chrome around all windows and miss the entire bank front, without console, miss the shining wheels too. Do not know how industry goes, hope industry try to learn with AI guys…. yep miss the chrome bumpers too… the hood ornaments… do not miss the cigarettes this era.
