Just last month, GM Authority reported that General Motors’ autonomous driving subsidiary Cruise was set to expand its robotaxi services to the Dallas, Texas area after relaunching its AV operations in Phoenix, Arizona in April 2024. Now, it appears as though the self-driving company is returning to the streets of Dallas this week.
In a post to social media, Cruise announced that it will begin reintroducing its Cruise AVs to the Dallas area as it continues to validate its self-driving technology. That being said, it’s worth noting that the robotaxi units will feature a safety driver behind the wheel ready to jump into action should the need arise.
Moving forward, it’s expected that the autonomous driving subsidiary will continue to expand its operations into the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler areas as certain safety benchmarks are reached.
As a reminder, Cruise has struggled mightily since the October 2023 incident where a pedestrian was unintentionally trapped and dragged underneath a Cruise AV unit after being struck by a human-driven vehicle. Since then, the self-driving company has been struck by a plethora of terminations and resignations, including that of former Cruise CEO and Co-Founder Kyle Vogt.
More recently, the robotaxi company reached a settlement with the aforementioned pedestrian that landed somewhere in the $8 to $12 million range, although the exact details are unspecified. In fact, the current condition of said pedestrian remains unknown.

In other Cruise-related developments, GM Authority recently reported that GM’s subsidiary was mapping out the streets of Phoenix with Chevy Equinox models to allow for the future reintroduction of autonomous vehicles to the city.

I always liked the idea of a remote driver better… human intelligence / accountability in the loop is always a good idea.
God help them.
Watch out!
