Classic Instruments Launches GM G-Body Gauge Cluster: Video

Owners of classic GM vehicles can now combine the looks of an original gauge cluster with modern functionality thanks to the G-Body Gauge Cluster released by Classic Instruments, which is showcased in a new 1-minute, 44-second video from the aftermarket parts maker.

The GM G-Body gauge cluster fits the 1982 to1988 Chevy El Camino, the 1982–1988 Chevrolet Malibu, the 1978 to 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the 1982 to 1987 GMC Caballero, with an included “speedometer, tachometer, clock, and fuel, oil, temp, and volt gauges.”

When it comes to aesthetics, the GM G-Body gauge cluster can be matched to several different classic looks, with available pointer styles including orange, red, nickel red, or white pool cue pointers, teardrop pointers in multiple styles, an orange spun center look, and V8 Speedster style. Buyers can also choose whether or not they want a gear indicator, and if they do, if overdrive will be included or not.

Meanwhile, despite its eye-catching retro looks, the gauge cluster uses modern technology to improve function, efficiency, and ease of installation. The cluster is all-electric, meaning it is effectively plug-and-play rather than needing painstaking connection of mechanical gauge linkages during installation. Push-button calibration is included to make the job even easier.

The gauge cluster is made with hybrid LED lighting to give the original look of the illuminated cluster while improving clarity and visibility in dark conditions. For more utility, “check engine” and “high beam” sockets are added to the cluster, with LED illumination. The fuel gauge can be used with a variety of OEM and aftermarket sending units because of an ohm range selector switch on its reverse side to program the cluster to work with the different sending units.

Other necessary items for installation are included, such as a wiring harness and a protective acrylic lens to fit over the cluster in place of the original. The existing diffuser is used to keep the “classic” appearance of the cluster.

Pricing for the GM G-Body gauge cluster starts at $1,024 to $1,030, with various extra options adding some additional charge. The cluster can be bought either directly from Classic Instruments or from Holley, giving classic car owners the opportunity to get modern function and precision while keeping the authentic look of OE gauges from the era of new wave music and Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies.

  2. Pretty amazing enough 30+ year old G’s to justify the build of this. Margins are probably decent, but still quite a bit of NRE that has to get spread over the unit cost. Had an 84 MC for a decade.
