Geely, an automotive manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, has announced the name of its upcoming electric crossover: the Geely Galaxy E5, and it’s on its way to rival the Buick Electra E4.
According to a report from Car News China, the automaker released a series of teaser “spy” shots featuring the all-new electric Galaxy E5 crossover overlaid on what seem to be AI-generated backdrops. The Galaxy E5 is just the latest all-electric vehicle to join the Geely Galaxy lineup, which launched in China in 2023 as a premium sub-brand under the Geely umbrella, slotting in above the entry-level Geely Geometry line.
As such, the Galaxy E5 will be sold alongside the existing Galaxy E8 and Galaxy L7. However, unlike its siblings, the Geely Galaxy E5 will be released globally as the automaker’s first worldwide product and will likely make its way to Europe. That means it will be offered in both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive, depending on market. At this time, powertrain figures and other specifications have not yet been revealed, and more information is expected to come to light during the 2024 Beijing Auto Show in April.
As a premium electric vehicle, the Galaxy E5 will compete with the Buick Electra E4 in China. The 2024 Buick Electra E4 now starts at 159,900 yuan, or about $22,250 USD thanks to recent price slashes enacted to keep the vehicle competitive. The Galaxy E5, meanwhile, is expected to start at 150,000 to 200,000 yuan, or roughly $21,000 to $28,000 USD, putting it right on par with the Electra E4 in terms of affordability.
Additionally, there may be some pricing overlap between the Buick Electra E5 and the (suspiciously) similarly named Geely Galaxy E5. The entry-level Electra E5 Pioneer Edition will start at 169,900 yuan, or roughly $23,250 USD, meaning the Tri-Shield brand will have two competitively priced EVs ready to take on the Galaxy E5 when it lands in China.
