General Motors has announced that six Flint, Michigan-based GM plants will award almost $300,000 in Community Impact Grants to eight local nonprofits.
This $270,000 donation is part of a larger group of grants supporting the Flint-Genesee area, which has amounted to more than $6 million since 2019.
“The work being done by these eight nonprofits in our local community is remarkable,” Flint Assembly plant executive director Chad Pung was quoted as saying. “GM is proud to be able to support the efforts with Community Impact Grants, and it’s important that we partner with the local communities and our employees to continue to make Flint and Genesee County a great place to live and work. Flint and Genesee County remain an important part of our history as the birthplace of GM, and we will remain committed to serving and improving this great community.”
This grant is intended to help address local issues in the communities involved, and is focused on STEM Education, Vehicle and Road Safety, and Community Development.
There were a number of recipients for this grant, including:
- Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint
- Michigan Crossroads Council, Boy Scouts of America
- Communities First, Inc.
- Red Ink Flint, Inc.
- Flint River Watershed Coalition

It’s worth noting that the six local GM facilities include Customer Care and Aftersales – Burton and Swartz Creek, Flint Assembly Plant, Flint Engine Operations, Flint Metal Center, and the North American Engineering and Tooling Center.
All recipients were recognized on May 10th, 2023 during the monthly Flint-Genesee Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Ascension Genesys Conference and Banquet Center.
In addition to grants, GM employees have also volunteered in the Flint-Genesee area. In fact, roughly 3,000 employees have contributed more than 50,000 volunteer hours to 98 nonprofits since 2018.
