William Byron and the No. 24 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 barely missed out on securing the pole position during qualifying for the Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but nothing could stand in the way of Byron’s charge from a second-place starting position to crossing the line in first place.
Byron’s No. 24 Camaro swept both Stage 1 and Stage 2, holding off charges from his NASCAR Chevy teammate, Kyle Larson in the No. 5 Camaro on his way past the start/finish line. In the latter laps of the race, Larson’s No. 5 Camaro led Byron’s No. 24 Camaro by almost two seconds when a late-race caution changed everything.
The No. 10 Ford Mustang of Aric Almirola went for a spin with four laps left, prompting a NASCAR Overtime finish. Byron’s crew called the No. 24 Camaro into the pits, and he eked out just ahead of Larson’s No. 5 Camaro to restart on the outside of the front row beside Martin Truex Jr.’s No. 19 Toyota TRD Camry, who had elected to stay out. When the green flag dropped, Truex’s No. 19 Camry plummeted backward while the cars with fresher tires charged past, and Byron’s No. 24 Camaro secured the lead once more and led all the way to the checkered flag.
“Just been really confident about the group of guys that I have on this 24 team,” said Byron. “They work extremely hard, and we spent a lot of time in the offseason just going through running at the [simulator] with Chevy and running on iRacing and just trying to get better as a race car driver and as a team.”
It was a one-two-three finish for Byron’s No. 24 Camaro and his Hendrick Motorsports teammates, as he led Larson’s No. 5 in second place and the No. 48 Camaro of Alex Bowman in third. Byron gave a shoutout to the fourth Hendrick driver, Chase Elliott, who was injured last Friday and unable to drive the No. 9 NASCAR Chevy Camaro this weekend.
“Thinking of Chase back home,” Byron said. “Wish he was out here with us. He’s a great race car driver, great teammate. Wish he was out here.”
So far, The Bow Tie has swept all three point-paying Cup Series races this year, as Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Camaro won the Daytona 500, and Kyle Busch’s No. 8 Camaro captured the win at Fontana.
