GM has donated $500,000 to the Automotive Hall of Fame (AHS) in Dearborn, Michigan to launch a new educational program called “Black Innovation, Invention, and Leadership in Mobility.”
According to Sarah Cook, president, of the AHS, the new educational program “will explore how mobility, vehicle ownership, and roadways have impacted Black communities in Detroit, throughout the country, and around the world, and will focus on first-hand oral histories of Black leaders, both historic and contemporary.” GM’s $500,000 donation will fund one year of content development for the program, which will utilize both physical exhibit space on the grounds of the Automotive Hall of Fame, as well as online and digital resources. Educational programming will span the K-12 audience and will also include an honoree lecture series.
The Automotive Hall of Fame says this grant from GM also enabled it to hire Kathleen Donald, its new vice president of operations and programs. The organization says Donald will lead the “reimagination strategy,” of the AHF, with the Black Innovation, Invention, and Leadership in Mobility program serving as the first step in this initiative. Donald will also collaborate with the AHF’s new curator, Dr. Micala Evans, to develop and launch the program.
Terry Rhadigan, GM’s vice president of Corporate Giving and a board member of the AHF, hopes said he hopes this program will help inspire the next generation of auto industry professionals.
“GM is proud to support the Automotive Hall of Fame as it launches its ‘Black Innovation, Invention, and Leadership in Mobility’ program,” Rhadigan said. “AHF’s efforts to create and share knowledge will spark social change through general education and promote new learning and career opportunities for our next generation of mobility leaders and influencers.”
The AHF says it is targeting a launch date of February 2023 for the Black Innovation, Invention, and Leadership in Mobility educational program. More information on the program will be divulged between now and its official launch.
