Shilpan Amin, current GM vice president for Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, has been appointed as senior vice president and president of GM International, the automaker announced this week.
Amin will replace long-serving GM International boss Steve Kiefer, who has elected to retire after spending more than 40 years spent in the automotive industry in a variety of high-ranking roles. GM said Kiefer is now turning his focus toward his non-profit charity the Kiefer Foundation, which aims to reduce and eventually end distracted driving and all associated traffic deaths and injuries. The Kiefer Foundation was established in 2016 in honor of Kiefer’s son Mitchel, who was tragically killed by a distracted driver that same year.
Amin is a longtime GM employee that first joined the company in 1996 as a product engineer in advanced product development. He has held various leadership roles within GM’s Vehicle Engineering and Global Purchasing and Supply Chain organizations since then, most recently serving as the VP of its global purchasing and supply chain operations.
In a statement, GM CEO Mary Barra said Amin’s supply chain experience make him the ideal candidate to run the automaker’s international operations.
“Shilpan’s experience leading GM’s purchasing and supply chain and his extensive global engineering background uniquely position him to run our international markets and build on the great momentum we have throughout the region,” Barra said in a statement. “His leadership during the global supply chain crisis is a testament to his ability to build relationships and manage complex global issues.”
Barra said Kiefer has helped build “strong momentum,” at GM International over the past five years, with the region delivering positive EBIT in three of the last five quarters after years of underperforming.
“Steve has been a valued member and major contributor to the GM leadership team for several years,” said Barra. “Under his leadership we have turned around our performance throughout the international markets. I thank Steve for his many contributions to GM, and I wish him and his family all the best in retirement and in his important work with the Kiefer Foundation.”
Amin’s appointment and Kiefer’s retirements will become effective on April 1st, 2022. GM says it will name a replacement for Amin in the near future.
