General Motors’ premium GMC truck brand topped its segment in the recent J.D. Power 2021 Mexico Vehicle Dependability Study.
The J.D. Power Mexico Vehicle Dependability Study measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. It then uses this data to assign each vehicle brand a ‘PP100’ score, with a lower score reflecting a more reliable and less problem-prone vehicle.
This year’s survey asked respondents about 177 specific vehicle problems, which are grouped into eight major categories: audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN); engine/transmission; exterior; interior; features/controls/displays (FCD); driving experience; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and seats. Because the study measures three-year old vehicles, the data from this year’s edition is based on the reliability of 2018 model year cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs.
GMC was first among Premium brands in the study with 175 problems reported per 100 vehicles, or a PP100 score of 175. BMW was second with a score of 206, followed by Audi at 207. The segment average for Premium brands was 214, with Mercedes-Benz falling below this with a score of 244.
The study also ranked non-premium Mass Market brands, with Hyundai leading the way from Toyota and Suzuki with a score of 132. Non-premium vehicles typically experience fewer problems as they are less likely to be fitted with advanced powertrains and new technologies such as active safety systems and in-car entertainment systems.
Commonly cited problems in this year’s MExicoVDS study included a faded or worn-out steering wheel after only three years of use or less, along with exterior cosmetic problems. The industry average in the study was 201 problems per 100 vehicles, which is a sharp increase from 148 problems per 100 vehicles in 2019.
Brais Álvarez, account manager at J.D. Power de Mexico, said automakers can improve their reliability across the board, with the number of problems increasing across all categories it records data for this year.
“In fact, automakers can find areas to improve across all categories, with owners reporting an increasing number of problems in each of them in this year’s study,” he said. “Automakers need to focus on the more severe problems for owners as these will drive them to defect to other brands in the future if they’re not addressed.”

Hmmmm? Maybe GM put Aftermarket Lifters in those models?
Maybe the lifters really are a much smaller issue than a few people make out it to be. People like you make it seem like 25% of them have issues when in reality it is in the decimal of a percent. Guess trolls really like to make things out bigger than they seem. I am guess you fall in to one of two camps. Either A) you had a lifter failure and are running around trying to smear them because if something is not perfect you throw a fit and a man and machine can’t make a mistake on occasion, or B) you have loyalty to another brand and thing again, smearing others will help your sales for some reason. Which do you fall in to? Because most people know outside of the occasional rogue failure the rates are very small that have issues.
Test drove a 2022 GMC Terrian yesterday. It drove good but was in opinion under powered.
I own a 2013 Terrian and I don’t believe that the new one would hold a candle to my 2013. I
did not however, get to drive it on a interstate but around town, I’d rather have my 2013.
Too bad 2022 Terrain not equipped with the 2.0 l engine little underpowered test drove it also wasn’t impressed wanted to order a Terrain Denali but only comes with 1.5 no 2.0 l engine just assumed Terrain Denali would at least give u a engine choice I guess not !!!
What I have read about them and the equinox, they are supposed to have a 2.0 liter in the Denali. The higher priced Equinox is also supposed to have the 2.0 engine. I’ll just keep my 2013.
I hope u are right but also read all trim levels only coming with 1.5 l but that being said a gm sales associate told me his gm rep said that lot of dealers disappointed with the deletion of 2.0 l specially in the terrain Denali but apparently 2023 supposed to bring back 2.0 l LSY BACK same engine in the Buick envision
I had not heard that. The salesman called just a few minutes wanting to know if I wanted to
buy one. I told him no that I would keep the 2013.
The way things are going there just going to probably stick with the 1.5 engine . Too bad the 2.0 l is great engine . Maybe need to look at a used 2020 GMC Terrain Denali!
The 2022 equinox and terrain we’re going to have a new 2.0 but was canceled at the last minute. Hopefully they bring it back with the 2023MY
Keep the 1.5L and add the 2.7L Turbo as an option on all but the base model.
This should keep many buyers happy!

Now we are talking 2.7 as a option would be nice but that would be a pipe dream
