Car meets can be a great way to meet fellow auto enthusiasts and engage with the hobby. Unfortunately, they also attract a fair number of attention-seeking car owners that want to show off their ride by doing unwarranted burnouts, donuts, flybys and engaging in other reckless behaviour. Many regular car meet participants know this kind of driving is discouraged as it can lead to law enforcement shutting the event down – but a Chevy Camaro ZL1 owner in Australia recently had to learn this lesson the hard way.
A video uploaded to the ViralHog YouTube channel this week shows said Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver doing a small burnout whilst trying to leave a car meet before attracting the attention of a well-camouflaged undercover police officer in a BMW 5 Series that was sitting behind him. The video isn’t long enough for us to see how the situation played out after the Camaro driver pulled over for the cop, but according to the dashcam owner, smoking rubber is considered a serious driving offence in Australia.
“I was at a car meet. In Australia, laws state you lose your car for burning rubber,” the dashcam owner said in the video description. “This guy has lost his car for 30 days.”
According to Australian law firm Armstrong Legal, doing a burnout on public roadways in the country can lead to a three-month driving ban and a $3,200 fine. That’s a hefty price to pay for a small burnout like what was seen in the video, but it’s hard to feel bad for the Camaro driver. We’re sure most Australian motorists are already familiar with these steep penalties – especially those that own a vehicle capable of easily smoking its rear tires like the Chevy Camaro ZL1.
