The Buick GS 400 was offered for the 1969 model year as either a hardtop or convertible. It could be had in standard 400 cubic-inch configuration producing 340 horsepower, or Stage 1 dress with 10.25:1 compression ratio, ram air intake, four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carb and dual exhaust producing 350 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Backing the 400 was either a four-speed manual or three-speed Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission. The Buick GS was produced exclusively at GM’s Fremont, California assembly plant. Our feature car is one of only three finished in rare and lustrous Fireglow Orange Metallic paint, which was only available at the end of the 1969 model year. The paint has been done to a high standard as part of a frame-off rotisserie restoration. Both front and rear chrome bumpers have been re-plated, and the stainless trim has been polished to a fault. The five-spoke GS Rally wheels are wrapped in Firestone redline bias-ply tires. GS emblems can be found on the rear quarters, in the grille and on the trunk lid. On the hood bulge are STAGE 1 badges. Inside the Buick GS is a beautifully contrasting Pearl White interior. Bucket seats are separated by a console that is home to the “horseshoe” shifter for the three-speed automatic transmission. Black carpets appear to be new, and the door sills are bright and shiny. The black dash also presents as new, free from any cracks or fading. The factory radio still resides in the dash. Beneath the hood of the Buick GS is the potent 400 cubic-inch V8. The engine bay has been carefully detailed. Proper matte black finish has been applied to the firewall and fenders. The engine itself wears chrome air cleaner and valve covers. The foam surrounds on the air intakes look to be recent, as they have not begun to crush from time and pressure.
This extensively restored Buick GS 400 Stage 1 is being offered by Mecum Auctions at their Indianapolis sale May 14th-22nd.

Why settle for only 400 cubic inches, when subsequent offerings were upgraded to the 455 cubic inch Stage 1?
Because in 69 Buick did not offer the 455. It came out in 70!

G.M. of Canada produced 486 GS 400 2dr sport coupes in 1969 for Canadian sale, 49 for worldwide export, and 1246 for export to the US. Remember the world exists outside the US!
These were beautiful cars. And now, Teslas are being built in the same Fremont plant offering very similar black and white interior color schemes. What’s old is new again.
My God, these were beautiful beasts of a car. My Grandparents had one. It was teal with white interior. I loved that car.
My first car, that I bought, was a 68 GS 400 convertible, turbo 400, red, black top and interior, lap belts only, no ram air, AC tilt buckets, no console, column shift. 400-4 340 hp, It would rip the tires off the car. Open rear 10 bolt. Hated the ignition on the dash with a non locking steering wheel. great car
