General Motors Joins Gender And Diversity KPI Alliance

General Motors has joined the Gender and Diversity KPI Alliance (GDKA), a newly formed coalition that requires corporations to use a certain set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure their own gender and diversity.

All corporations that join the GDKA must agree to track the following performance measures as part of their efforts to measure and improve diversity within their organizations:

1. Percentage of representation on the board
2. Percentage of representation by employee category
3. Pay equality (the ratio of compensation by employee category, i.e. equal pay for equal work)

The GDKA says these three KPIs were developed by the World Economic Forum International Business Council in partnership with the Global Reporting Initiative. The Global Reporting Initiative is a standards organization that helps businesses, governments and other organizations track and communicate their impacts on issues like climate change, human rights and corruption.

“Diversity in all its dimensions — including of thought and experience — creates a stronger workforce and promotes innovative thinking,” Kristen Siemen, GM’s vice president of Sustainable Workplaces and chief sustainability officer, said in a statement. “We are proud to be leading equal representation at the board level and are excited for the day when female and diverse leadership at all levels is the norm.”

“By committing to measuring diversity using these KPIs, corporate leaders are taking the steps necessary to drive change,” added Lorraine Hariton, GDKA co-chair. “These companies serve as role models for others, demonstrating that leadership and accountability start at the top.”

GM CEO Mary Barra meets with workers in 2019

Last year, GM CEO Mary Barra implemented a new inclusion advisory board at the automaker, which is a group of 11 internal and external leaders who work to improve diversity and inclusion within the company. Several women leaders serve on the Inclusion Advisory Board, including McKnight Foundation president Tonya Allen, GM chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer Telva McGruder and Barra herself.

Barra has also said she wants to make GM the “most inclusive company in the world,” in the coming years by promoting race and gender diversity within its upper ranks.

“While we are proud of the role we’ve played in expanding opportunities for women in manufacturing and STEM-related fields, we will build on this and do the hard work required to expand equity and inclusion for other underrepresented groups,” the automaker says on its diversity-focused corporate web page.

Other companies that have already joined the GDKA include Google, Pfizer, American Airlines, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Lockheed Martin and Citi, among others.

  1. AKA more female centric rubbish. Since everyone wants diversity of the sexes. I say that we go back to having more male teachers in the K-12 range. Young men benefit way more having a masculine teacher. Of course this will not happen as diversity only applies to industries created and managed by men. Specifically dominate companies/corporations that men created are the targets. Not my fault that females tend to follow their biology and are not interested in this science and tech jobs. Same with males, males tend to not care for jobs that require more care. Males and females are different.

The days of merit are out the window. Just let things happen naturally folks. The few females that are actually interested in engineering realm will purse it organically and are usually good at what they do as they wanted to do this path. The feminized USA is going to be way less competitive in the coming years. As companies do not pursue talent. Only metrics. The rest of the non-western world only cares about results. It is going to be a very rude awakening in the coming decades.

Good riddance! Such a large fall from grace Karen nation.

    1. Well GM did go BK with “balls to the walls”… just sayin.

Just offer products that will sell.

      1. “Balls to the wall” is an old steam-era reference having zero to do with imaginary gender: it refers to the centrifugal governor weights at maximum extension, indicating a steam engine operating at peak governed speed.

        1. I know that, also it had to do with older large jets when applying power the ball shaped throttles were pushed to the max.

As said my point stands as men took GM BK. Also IMO most women by nature are not into STEM but that don’t mean they can’t have a path to succeed in a STEM company.

        1. Bet you would never say that to a white nationalist’s face.

          1. You mean a neo Nazi? Are those still around even?

As far as white nationalists go, I’m probably considered one by the left. They think anyone that isn’t a communist is a white nationalist.

But actually I don’t belong to any sort of political parties, sorry.

Too many male babies being born?

No problem, just change the gender.

    2. I wonder where all this touchy-feely crap was about two years ago when GM (and other companies for that matter) laid off its oldest and highest paid employees? Funny, when GM was at the top in the 1960s and 1970s, plenty of women and minorities had opportunities to work in their factories and offices- probably more so than today.

      1. If they were laying off old white men, I doubt these particular touchy-feely people would have cared. They may even have cheered about it.

  4. Yeah, equality, can we start by paying male engineers as much as females? Lawyers ditto? Last I saw, female engineers made 1:14 for every males dollar.

    1. Apparently equality doesn’t matter here for many commenters. Anyone that doesn’t fit within their demographic is not worthy of the position or the pay.

      1. Gender is like the metric system and the english system. There’s only 2.

        Reply
        1. There are only 2 genders. How much do we need to diversify? Either children fall out or you, or they don’t, it’s as simple as that. People are really overthinking this, and I can’t believe so much money is being invested into b.s. like this when that same money could go to better causes, such as education, hunger, and poverty.

      2. No, enforced diversity is what is being protested. Hire the best qualified, regardless of gender or skin colour. Do not hire just to hit some arbitrary quota. Every time affirmative action is attempted, it fails. When you hire on any other criteria than competence, you will get people who simply cannot do the job.

  5. You’d think that companies would simply want to hire the people with the best credentials and merit, but apparently that means nothing in the 21st century. A person’s sex, skin color, religion, etc. means nothing in the business world. None of that matters, but what does matter is the results that you bring to your company.

Maybe next season, we will see a few people under 4′ tall that are also blind playing in the NBA because it will be a “feel good” story. 🙁

  8. Family friend told me about hiring at GM in the 1960s. He waited in line and applied at Pontiac Motors. He was welcomed to the “GM Family” on the spot and asked if he could start immediately (as in right now). There were many women and minorities working at Pontiac Motors, GMC Truck and Coach down the street, Olds in Lansing, Buick and Chevy in Flint, and Cadillac in Detroit. This is not to mention the literally hundreds of parts plants GM had across the nation. You see, GM at the time was the no-holds-barred market leader, had desirable product (at least for the times) that sold itself. There were plenty of opportunities for everyone. Since Roger Smith and his incompetent successors took a wrecking ball to GM, there are fewer opportunities and virtue signaling means every sub group has to be represented so the company can get their pat on the back. I am not only ripping GM- this is prevalent at many organizations these days including Ford.

  9. It seems GM doesn’t preach inclusion or diversity in construction. On GK jobs (GMs #1 supplier) bullying of tradesmen by GK project management is condoned….. all harassment is swept under the rug rather than documenting it.

    Currently still an issue….. 7/31/2021
