General Motors has just released a teaser image of the all-new Buick Enclave for the Chinese market. The photo shows the upcoming crossover’s rear end, though it’s worth noting that images of the completely uncovered vehicle were leaked in August. The teaser arrives exactly one year after GM Authority exclusively reported that GM was developing this new Buick crossover, whose program code is C1UB-S.
Along with the image, the automaker formally announced that the new mid-size Buick Enclave will launch in China before the end of 2019, further expanding Buick’s utility portfolio in its largest market. As such, it will become the Buick’s largest SUV in the Chinese market, as well as the brand’s first seven-seat crossover model to be manufactured locally in China.
“The arrival of the all-new Enclave will further enhance Buick’s SUV portfolio in China,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick at SAIC-GM, in a statement. “It will join the Encore, Encore GX and Envision, giving Buick a strong presence in the small, compact, midsize and large SUV segments.”
It is worth clarifying that this all-new Buick crossover, initially planned to be called Buick Envoy, transforms the Enclave into a family of crossovers that consists of two different vehicles: the full-size offered exclusively in North America and now this new “midsize-plus” model for China. At this time it is not clear if the baby Enclave will be sold in North America.
While we already knew how the upcoming “baby” Buick Enclave will look thanks to the aforementioned leaks, the teaser shown by GM allows us to see several details of its rear end. Highlights include signature LED taillights in the form of a wing, a horizontal bar that connects the taillights and the double exhaust outlets in the lower fascia. In addition, the teaser highlights the prominent position of the Buick logo, embedded in the bottom of the rear glass much like in the full-size Enclave and compact Envision.
GM also revealed that the utility will introduce an evolution of Buick’s SUV design language and incorporate cutting-edge technologies.
The automaker further indicates that this new Buick Enclave will house its latest propulsion system compatible with China’s emissions regulations, confirming that it will be equipped exclusively with the GM 2.0L I-4 LSY turbocharged engine that generates a maximum of 233 horsepower. The eighth-generation Ecotec engine mates with the new GM 9-speed automatic transmission.
For China, the new Enclave will be manufactured at the Cadillac Jinqiao plant. The vehicle is directly related to the three-row Chevrolet Blazer that will also be announced in the near future, and which we recently caught undergoing testing. Both models share the regular wheelbase, wide track, long rear overhang version of the GM C1 platform launched by the Cadillac XT6.
Now that we’re covered the complete details of the all-new, midsize-plus Buick Enclave, all that’s left to do is await the crossover’s official reveal in the coming weeks. Enspire should replace Envision in N. A. but baby Enclave would be a nice addition.
Buick must be choosey with the US line up if it hopes to challenge the Japanese luxury brands.
Why would the baby Enclave make a nice addition? The real enclave does everything better… it’s bigger and more powerful… and is a runaway sales success. There is no need for the baby Enclave in the US. It’s needed in China because the real Enclave is too big for that market.
