A TV advertisement for the GMC Sierra’s MultiPro Tailgate is seeing success with viewers, according to marketing research firm iSpotTV.
iSpotTV, which provides weekly rankings for advertising performance, found that General Motors’ “Anthem” ad for the MultiPro Tailgate for the 2019 GMC Sierra received the highest number of viewer impressions among all automotive ads on U.S. national broadcast and cable television.
Additionally, iSpotTV found that the ad had the highest ranking in its “iSpot Attention Index”, which determines the ads that had the least amount of people change the channel, fast forward or turn the TV off while it was on the screen.
The ad humorously depicts pickup truck owners carrying their Ford and Ram tailgates to an undisclosed location as they chant the lyrics to the song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” by Steam – suggesting they are waving goodbye to their regular truck tailgates after seeing the MultiPro Tailgate light.
A GMC exclusive offering, the MultiPro Tailgate has a variety of positions for different uses. The tailgate can fold into a step, a bed load stop, a workbench and more, making life easier for tradesman, job site workers, hobbyists and the like.
One of Chevrolet’s “real people” ads occupies the third position in iSpotTV’s weekly rankings. The ad, which depicts Chevy owners explaining why they switched to the brand from another, also features voiceover telling shoppers they can get a deal on the Chevrolet Equinox when they finance the vehicle with GM Financial.

The ad is ridiculous. They’re all carrying Ford tailgates because it’s not a multipro GM Sierra gate. Yet they could just as easily be carrying Chevrolet tailgates. The Chevy tailgate is the same as the Ford. Is GM poking fun at Chevy too??
It was obviously not meant to be taken so literally. Do you know what “tongue in cheek” means?
Great advert! Nice to see GMC creating something more meaningful than Professional Grade.
Would imagine the ladies over at Chevrolet are clutching their pearls right about now.
Don’t super-love it.
But nice to see GM airing a Tier One brand advert that isn’t hamstrung by 14 seconds of incentive-messaging like Buick is doing on the NCAA.
The Chevy tailgate is self lifting and lowering not the same as Ford or ram and the special new tailgate is stupid the crease isn’t even in the center
Also Ford waves around the sell the most trucks is ridiculous Ford by itself sells more than Chevy but Chevy and gmc are the same and should be treated that way. Ford should compete with gm not the child companies
Adam,
That’s false and has been for several years. (since at least the 2009 recession) Ford outsells both chevy and GMC by a healthy margin. In fact in the last months, even Ram outsold or came very close to GM.
WHEN YOU ADD IN FLEET YES LOL…..BUT FORD CANNOT HOLD A CANDLE TO GMC IN QUALITY……FACT
James Arnold,
State your source, otherwise your statement is basically fake news.
James I agree I see more fords broke down o. The side of the road or in the garage do to repair than I have GMC Chevy and Dodge

Anecdotes don’t qualify as evidence.
One of the reasons why Ford trucks have out sold GM and Dodge is because Ford went with a cheaper way of making there trucks by making the beds from Aluminum to lighten the load of the body to gain fuel efficiency
The reason Ford out sells everyone is fleet sales at low prices.
Cities and states buy them because they are the low bidder
Who buys a full size pickup truck for fuel economy?
D Rush,
Guess you haven’t checked the price of aluminium?????????? Nonsense!!!!!
GMC is the best looking pickup truck on the market. Very good commercial!! Chevy is second, Ram third and Ford last! Period
Just wait and see how long they last bending in the middle till ole fat boy overloads it and creases the tailgate…..expensive to replace …and no need for it….
Great commercial on a great feature.
It calls out the other brands. It has humor that is appealing and it has a song that gets in your heard.
What it lacks is the silly focus groups with heavily edited comments that just do not come across as genuine.
Chevy needs to get back to like a rock. I just saw Seger in concert and he still has wide appeal to 15 to 75 year olds. That song is still in my head.
I’m sure most those tailgates are photo shopped or made of light weight plastic. With real tailgates they be carrying about 100 lbs of steel, except here it is like they are ready to fly a kite. Still a decent commercial. Short and to the point.
That’s not what Photoshop is,it doesn’t edit videos like that.
A standard tailgate is also not very heavy, no where near 100lbs.
Just a guess as to why the channel wasn’t changed, people couldn’t believe how incredibly stupid the commercial is. Next time it aired they had to rewatch because they couldn’t believe the face on the actor standing on the tailgate.
You can’t draw the conclusion that the ad is humorous or entertaining just because viewers didn’t change the channel. People also pause to see train wrecks. I am planning to order a new GMC Sierra Denali with the multi-pro tailgate but watching a bunch of idiots carry their tailgates to the top of a mountain is not an inspiring commercial. Nor does it make any sense… are they planning a new age ritual to burn their tail gates and channel their inner beings into enlightenment?
I’m waiting for a YouTube parody where GMC tricks out their rear view mirror .. and, supposedly, this alone makes everyone desperate to change to GMC.
