It was widely perceived the new Opel Astra K would not see a sedan variant after poor sales in Europe, but if these latest spy shots from AutoWeek are anything to go by, it seems it will be returning after all.
Specifically, it looks very, very similar to the North American Chevrolet Cruze, which shares the D2XX platform with the Opel Astra K. Of course, this platform also underpins the new 2016 Buick Verano in China, too.
The spy shots come hot on the heels of a new 2018 Opel Corsa hatchback spotted, and a sedan variant of that specific vehicles as well. It could be Opel’s play to properly challenge the sedan lineup from Ford and other rivals. But, as stated earlier, the segment is quite small in Europe, where more functional hatchbacks and wagons rein supreme.
Opel, we’ll do a trade. You may have the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, but only if we can have the Astra K hatchback.

I really like the Cruze hatch. Why did Chevy waste money on a NA intro with Astra already perfected?
Old GM did multiple varients of the same vehicle. In many ways the exact same thing is happening in the US and EUROPE. With CIS no longer asking Chevrolet, overlap is no longer any worry.
