300-Horsepower Chevy Cruze Turns Commuter Into Sleeper: Video

It’s unlikely that the 2017 Chevy Cruze is the first thing you think of when it comes to ripping off a few high-speed highway runs. Practical and understated? Sure, but the fun factor may be a bit lacking, for some. Luckily, there’s a solution, and it’s as simple as this – big turbocharger pumping out lots of boost. Now, we’re seeing what happens when the second-gen Cruze is upgraded with 300 wheel horsepower, all thanks to the following feature video.

As highlighted by the ThatDudeinBlue YouTube channel, this 2017 Chevy Cruze was modified by ZZPerformance, a tuner that has built a name for itself by focusing on some otherwise unassuming GM products, including the Chevy Sonic. After throwing in a few choice components, ZZPerformance transformed this modest commuter car into a 300-horsepower “sleeper” that’s more than capable of catching a traditional sports cars on the back foot. Interestingly, the power increase is provided solely by a prototype turbo kit, without any extensive internal modifications to the Cruze’s 1.4L LE2 gasoline engine. Boost levels are estimated at 30 psi.

The video host details how the new turbo system changes the Cruze’s character to become a thrilling, stealthy performer. Thanks to an inconspicuous design, which shows only some aftermarket wheels and minimal exterior tweaks alluding to what’s under the hood, this Cruze stays under the radar. At least until the turbo kicks in, at which point the car surges ahead with surprising acceleration, especially for a compact four-door.

Despite the increase in power, the Cruze handles the boost with impressive stability, showing minimal torque steer, a common issue in high-powered, front-wheel-drive cars. The host also relishes the aggressive engine sounds and turbo sensations, describing the car as fun, but practical enough for daily use. Notably, the interior remains comfortable, and the exhaust noise is kept at a manageable level.

It’s an interesting combo, and breathes new life into a sedan that some enthusiasts may have overlooked. Check out the full feature video right here:
