Simon Pagenaud Qualifies First For Race Two Of Chevrolet Dual In Detroit

Simon Pagenaud completed a weekend sweep of pole position at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix today, qualifying first with a time of 1:14.0739 seconds.

Qualifying for Race 2 saw the field of 22 drivers split into two groups, whereas Friday’s session pitted the entire field against one another. Pagenaud led the session for Group 1, while Ryan Hunter Reay led the session for Group 2 with a time of 1:14.5621 and claimed the second spot on Row 1 for today’s race.

The Group 2 qualifying session was impacted by rain, which only covered certain portions of the track 13-turn Belle Isle circuit. Further drama unfolded when Pagenaud’s Penske teammate Will Power topped Pagenaud’s pole time, but was bumped to fourth after interfering with Marco Andretti’s qualifying lap. Andretti qualified 22nd with a time of 1:16.4531.

IndyCar will return to the track at Detroit today at 3:30 p.m. Click here for full results from qualifying.
