1992 “Richard Petty Special Edition” Pontiac Grand Prix Surfaces: Craigslist Find

This 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix is not only in pristine condition (so it seems), it also bears the signature of NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Rusty Wallace. With just 4,631 miles on the dash it is still in showroom condition, and the seller states that the autographs look as if they were just signed yesterday.

At first we weren’t sure what to make of this exclusive Grand Prix. The listing states that it is number 122 of 1,000, however, no documents of authenticity are mentioned. Taking this into consideration along with the fact that a similar car, which included a letter of authenticity from Richard Petty, sold for $11,000 at Barrett-Jackson‘s Palm Beach 2010 leads us to think that the price could be inflated. With no documentation aside from a clean North Carolina title, it could be a tall order for the seller to even get half of what they are asking.

What do you think about this vintage Pontiac? Is it a fine collector’s item, or is it yet another gimmick on Craigslist? Tell us what you think by commenting below.

  1. The Petty edition Grand Prix is not a gimmick. ASC took an SE edition and added the sunroof Petty striping , badge and other appearance items that make the car unique. I just purchased a ’92 Neon Blue with a sunroof and 5 speed manual trans. They can be authenticated using the VIN by someone who has access to the CompNine database.

There were in fact 1000 produced, 333 blue, 333 red and 334 white. Only a select few received a sunroof, and only 75 of the 1000 were ordered with the 5 speed.

  3. Hi Steve,
It seems to be a niche market for these cars from what I’ve seen. I know a guy trying to sell one of the ’91 Petty Pepsi contest cars, only has 5K miles and has alot of documentation but can’t seem to get $10K. I would start on the usual sites, eBay, Craigs. I also think taking it to shows and cruise in will expose it to the folks that would have the most interest and would be able to see it in person rather than in pictures.

BTW, what are the details on yours? Color, trans, options, miles?

  4. It is ashame that the Petty Editions don’t sell for much money! They are so rare no one even knows about them. Maybe some day they will go up in price? Hopefully they could be like a Superbird that everyone dreams about owning!!!!

    1. Had alot of fun with mine. 2 trips to the Pontiac Nationals in Norwalk, 1300 miles, took 1st both times. Neon blue, 5 speed, HUD, moon roof. Signed by Richard and Kyle on the glove box door. Would’ve kept it but only have a 2 car garage for my toys and have 63 and 66 Pontiacs.

  6. My car is #465 and has 10600 miles on it now. The car has never been wet sits in my museum along side of a 1994 Petty Dodge Ram Truck 76000 miles been wet never seen snow, and 2010 Petty’s Garage Dodge Challenger 2010 miles on it never been wet. It is nice going to car shows with these knowing there probably won’t be another one there! Just got back from Petty Fest at Petty’s Garage in Level Cross NC with the truck my 4th time there with the truck. Enjoy the cars while you can won’t be long all the cars will be electric and self driving hopefully not in my lifetime!!!
