General Motors Files Another Patent For Seven-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission

Back in 2011, General Motors filed a patent for a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and we still haven’t seen such a gearbox emerge from the depths of Milford and into showrooms. But just this year, May 2, to be exact, GM filed again for a seven-speed DCT unit.

This rekindles talk of the C7 Corvette eventually getting a dual-clutch unit, perhaps with a high-end model like the next-generation Z06 or ZR1. At the same time, it rattles the expectations of the C7 receiving an eight-speed unit. All we can do right now is wait, and see if sources can help us sort this all out.

  1. I wonder if maybe the original was a little more Mitsubishi dual clutch and a little less Porsche PDK so back R&D it went.

Since the Z07 of past, well Z06, always added lightness (-Colin Chapman) I’d wager this is more intended for the ZR1, or whatever they choose to be the next ultra-horsepower model Corvette. Probably an option on the Z07, but it is uneeded weight and takes away from the purist driving aspect of that model for it to be the standard trans. Would also be a great tranny for the Cadillac halo!.. Hell, even finding a home in the 3rd gen CTS-V would be excellent.
