Five Things We Like About The 2014 Buick Regal

We just returned from a day-long adventure at the 2013 New York Auto Show, some of which was spent examining the refreshed 2014 Buick Regal. Here are the top five things we like about the updated sport sedan:

The Addition Of All-Wheel-Drive

One of the biggest complaints about the Buick Regal and Regal GS was the lack of all-wheel-drive. Buick changes that for the 2014 model year. Sure, the implementation of the latest Haldex AWD system adds extra weight, but it also adds grip. And for those looking for better cornering abilities, and quicker acceleration, AWD is a must. Being that the Regal is an athletic vehicle, it only makes sense to finally offer the latest AWD technology to consumers.

The New 2.0L LTG Turbocharged Engine

The LTG is General Motors’ latest 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder engine. In doing so, it replaces the outgoing LHU motor, and gives the Regal Turbo an increase in output — to 259 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. More power and torque is always a good thing.

Impressive Safety Features

The 2014 Buick Regal doesn’t just benefit from extra performance, but also extra safety. Active safety such as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Following Distance Indicator are all present in the 2014 Regal, as is Collision Mitigation Braking and Full-Speed Range-Adaptive Cruise Control.

Enhanced Design And Technology

The changes may be subtle, but sometimes that’s all you need. Inside and out, the 2014 Regal lets onlookers know that it’s not the same. We especially like the look of the rear tail lamps, and the lower LED lamps. Couple that with the latest version of Buick’s IntelliLink infotainment system and the Regal GS‘ intuitive driver-oriented instrument panel, and these upgrades should help the 2014 Regal increase its (recently-lackluster) sales.

Improved Interior Materials

To be taken seriously in the luxury market, Buick had to do something about the quality of its interior materials. While most couldn’t tell the difference between what’s used in a Buick and what’s used in a Lexus, discerning customers could definitely notice some the Regal’s previous shortcomings. That’s why the improvements in interior material in the 2014 Regal, as well as the 2014 LaCrosse, are most welcome.

  7. I’m confused of why they didn’t amped up the LTG on the GS? since now it’s the same horsepower rating as the regular turbo model, it makes it irrelevent for GS to stay?

  8. Vic, no question the Regal GS should have the 3.5L matched with ate AWD system…

Not when it comes at the expense of fuel economy, which remains to be seen. I still want this car with a V6 which has even more power and doesn’t require the premium fuel that the turbo does.

Also, they really need to redo the center console and move the cupholders so that the armrest doesn’t have a big chunk missing from the passenger side.

I love the way this car looks though, even better than it already did.

  10. Why no grey leather choice? all black or red, brown, and tan, I love the car, but they should offer a grey/light-gray and black interior choice.

  11. What’s up with that last photo in the above section “Also Don’t Miss”? Did some one forget we aren’t getting a wagon with this refresh? Other than that….. It is one sweet Buick. I like it more than the La Crosse. These new details give the car in my mind, a little more fluid look. The new lights also help make the accent line down the front door, which I have never really liked, a lot more agreeable to look at.

    1. @Paul I think you’re referring to the spy photos of what was once thought of as a 2014 Buick Regal wagon. Obviously, this body style isn’t in the cards for North America… but it may have been, at some point.

  12. Is GM so convinced that wagons and/or hatch will not sell that they would not try one vehicle in any line? The Sonic comes in sedan or hatch. Are they afraid they may take away CUV sales? Wouldn’t a Regal wagon sell at least as many as CTS wagon?

  13. I say try it and see what happens. It’s not like they haven’t spent money on something they thought would go, only to have it flop before. The results just might surprise them. The Regal wagon would be an awesome affordable alternative to the above CTS wagon.

  14. I wouldn’t consider the Regal a competitor to the Audi A4, but it’s certainly the best premium sport sedan you can buy right now.
