General Motors reported 186,505 U.S. sales during November 2012 — a 3 percent increase compared to November of last year. The results are the highest November sales GM has had in the U.S. since 2007.
Overall, retail sales were equal to those of last year on a year-over-year basis, while fleet sales increase 16 percent. In addition, the average transaction price (ATP) increased $750 per unit compared to those from November 2011, even while sales of cars and crossovers — which are not as profitable as trucks — increased from 56 percent to 62 percent (year-over-year). The ATP also increased $190 per unit from October 2012, when the car and crossover mix was 60 percent.
GM, along with its industry competitors, faces several nation-wide challenges in the next several months, including natural disaster recovery and the infamous fiscal cliff.
“The East Coast’s ongoing recovery from Hurricane Sandy helped drive the November SAAR materially higher, but it benefited our competitors more than GM, since they rely on the region for more of their sales,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations.
“It’s clear that the industry will come in at the high end of our full-year sales forecast,” McNeil added. “Exactly how much growth we can expect next year will depend in part on how Congress and the president resolve the fiscal cliff issue. Consumers hate uncertainty, so an agreement on ways to reduce long-term federal budget deficits could remove an impediment to growth.”

The Regal dropped in half but the Verano went up 900%! Wow.
Verano looks to be taking a lot of Regals sales but the Verano sold almost 4 times Regal.
I wonder how many sales the Encore will take from the Enclave? Just kidding.
While I’m glad GM’s sales numbers are in positive territory, they always seem to pale each month in comparision to some of the foreign competitors, who more often than not, deliver double-digit increases. For example, Toyota’s Novembers sales were up 17% and VW registered a whopping 29%. Will GM ever hit such numbers, or are they destined to continually toil in the single-digit range?
Ray — VW’s 30 percent YOY growth resulted in 36,728 sales (for the VW brand). Compare it to its most direct competitor from GM (Chevy), and VW’s numbers are negligible. Heck, the Volt sold more units than the much more “mainstream” and much less expensive Golf!
As for Toyota, they reported sales of 161,695 units. This includes Lexus and Scion. GM still has them beat, although it will be interesting to see if Big T can keep the double-digit growth into the future.
One thing to keep in mind: Chevy is about to embark on its biggest new product offensive in the last 3 decades. That should give GM sales a nice boost, perhaps pushing them over the 200,000 a month mark.
Industry wise, growth was 12% last month. Anyone under that number is losing market share. While I assume GM will spin this to Tuesday, it’s not a good sign when looking at who out there is attracting the consumer.
The rest of the story is in. Sales are up 15%.
Toyota was up 17% and Honda at 39%. EVERY other volume marque was under the 15%. The story is not really how poorly GM and Ford did but how remarkable Toyota and Honda did. What gives?
Good new, ATS is doing quite well for only being out since October 🙂 And Buick is really doing a good job…especially the Verano!
People are forgetting that toyota and hondas numbers are inflated because last year they werent close to full production due to the tsunami
Thanks for pointing that out jgia – I was about to do the same. 🙂
Perhaps the Japanese numbers are a bit skewed but in fairness, GM was pretty happy about their numbers last year and nobody stated that they were inflated then.
Hello… Toyota and Honda facilities were all but shut down, of course they are going to have incredible numbers… The real story is that GM is growing and we cant get the new trucks soon enought cause that is where sales are down…
Not in November 2011. They were up 7% over November 2010 while GM was also up 7%. Tsunami happened in March. They were pretty well restocked and sales leveled off.
the Captiva sales are bogus and should not even be counted. They are fleet ONLY. If I can’t go down to the Dealer and buy a NEW one the sales mean nothing.
??????
Sorry the industry is not meeting your standards of reporting.
The idea of reporting out is how total sales are in the country, not just retail. Are all the fleet sales at Toyota and everywhere else bogus?
All that matters: Market-share November ’12: 16.31% CYTD: 17.89%. GM sales up 3.4% and 3.5% CYTD. Market up 15% for Nov and 13.9% CYTD. Spin can’t even begin to make the results acceptable.
they don’t sell enough variety. All sedans. No hatch except the tiny Sonic. Only the plus size Equinox (No Captiva for public) and old Colorado trucks. They have a lousy read of the market.
I’d preface that with “currently”, as in they currently have a lousy read on the market.
With the all-new generations of products (especially Cruze, Equinox), they should be able to take care if business much better.
Alex, I hope GM can improve on the Malibu’s flaws soon enough. However, with 13 new Chevy models on the way, I think that the competition might be in for a real spanking. So all those increases by Toyota and others, might not necessarily be enjoying double digit increases in the future for certain segments.
Valiance — agreed. Also, the only department where the Malibu is lacking (according to some) is in rear seat legroom; I’m not aware of any ways to correct this without making an all-new model, so we’ll likely have to deal with it for now. Personally for me, the 2nd row legroom was fine
The other common criticism is the car’s “lackluster fuel economy”. Not sure why, since it’s perfectly competitive when looking at fuel economy figures (as they relate to the vehicle’s price).
I’m really impressed with the Buick/GMC numbers seeing that they are almost on par with monthly Kia sales. I’ve think that GM could build really do something special here–firstly, by building the new Opel Cascada, the Astra Coupe and a new Buick flagship to go up against LS. These new additions plus Buicks current offerings could easily outsell Lexus.
As for GMC, I’d love to see the brand take on Jeep with two non-chevy vehicles. Also, I think all GMCs should wear the Buick Tri-Shield badge. This would aid in creating a solid brand and give GMC a more upmarket feel.
Buick and Caddy are very different brands and there is no reason why they both can’t compete against the German big3. I honestly believe that Buick will go further upmarket over the next ten years and that GM will eventually be known as a luxury maker.
Now, if they would only buy Mazda…
Couldn’t agree more about Buick, Steve. There’s a significant opportunity to cater to luxury car buyers who aren’t looking for performance, but rather a silent, soft, coddling, and disconnected experience that was provided by Lexus in the 90s and early 2000s — before they decided to chase after BMW (rather unsuccessfully).
Regarding Mazda: forget buying them… just offer better technology (that GM, for the most part, already has) in Chevys. 🙂
