2013 Chevy Camaro 1LE Crushes Mustang Boss 302’s VIR Lap Time By 4.46 Seconds: Video

Virginia International Raceway is a far cry from the Nur-burger-king-ring, but the short track still serves as a great measure for performance. And the new 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE was able to lay the track time down in an eye-opening 2:58.34.

What makes that time so significant? It dusts its rival Ford Mustang Boss 302 around the track by 4.46 seconds. And that’s not just any Boss 302, but the special Laguna Seca edition. In fact, the time is so quick that it’s a mere 0.3 seconds away from the time posted by the exotic Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, but still five seconds behind it’s big brother, the 580-horse Camaro ZL1.

Below is a video capturing the event.

  3. Wow thats awesome! That’s as fast as a Grand Sport Vette!! But seriously, they really need to advertise this. The last Camaro commercial I saw was the convertible driving along the sea. It was good but that was a longish time ago. They need to advertise that it’s faster than the Mustang. And also their new nav screen. I mean seriously!! Have you seen the Mustang commercials?? They make me want a mustang, but then I have to remember I’m a Chevy fan. An awesome car deserves awesome ads. That is one reason Mustang sales are slowly beating the Camaros.

  4. That’s pretty cool: LE1 > Boss 302 Laguna Seca, while the ZL1 is 2x > Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Nice!

  6. I would like to see the Boss and the 1LE head to head both with the same driver, on the same day. that is going to be the true outcome between the cars, which are both pretty sweet rides.

  7. So the Boss 302’s time was also posted up by a professional driver? What exactly are they comparing?

  8. I find this quiet amusing. On a open track day in Oct 2012, a non professional driver in a Boss 302 consistently does over 20 laps under 2.35 seconds. Fastest lap @ 2.31.06 and you say a 1LE camaro crushes a Mustang. Keep on dreaming and lying.

    1. Well….. 4 and a half seconds is kind of alot, sooo……

    2. Who is “dreaming and lying”? The proof is in the puddin’ that is this video…

  9. This is also amusing that a jorunalist gets through testing a GT 500 & ZL! Camro and picks a winner! GT 500 wins the dyno shootout, road course time is 4 seconds faster, 1/4 time 4 tents quicker. Randy Pobst does the driving, and says in his video, the GT really puts the power down, braking a little slow, but in the Test the GT outbreaks the Camaro by 10 ft. Winner – Camaro; if it had been the other way around they would not even published the results. So who is paying who? You use to count on people being honest, today they do not know what the word means.

  10. You post one video, with just a couple of laps. You are like the people who posted the one class win of Dave Conolly @ U S nationals, you would have thought by all the hoopla he had won a world chapionship. By the way the mustang was not a CJ 5.4, it was a 428 n/a with 40 yr specs, Chevy has had 5 yrs developing the LS7 with modern tectnology and new specs going against a 40 yr old specificied engine. What a joked.

  11. Must be something wrong with laws of physics. Car weights 228 lbs less, has 24 more hp ; does 1/4 mi in 12.4 sec @ 115, zero to 60 in 4.0 using 373. gear versus 391 gear, 1/4 mi 12.7 @ 111 mp weights 228 lbs more, 24 hp less 60-0 101′ versus 60-0 105′ both using same size brake pads, same brake manufacture, stops 5′ shorter but weights 228 lbs more @ same speed. Please; you must be joking, Takes a freight train with 50 car boxs 5 miles @ 60 mph to stop. Your car loses in all categories but one and yet it can lap VIR quicker! Must be in wrong math class.

  12. This is the biggest amount of crap I’ve ever read. So what this article is saying basically is that the ZL1 is almost 10 seconds faster than a Boss 302 around the track. Umm…anyone see a problem with this? Get your facts straight author. Hope Chevy paid you well to write this rubbish.

  13. The fact of the matter is that the 1LE posted laptimes under 3 min close to the GT500 times and better than any GT or BOSS model …in fact in every case scenario when automotive editors have ask pleaded and begged Ford to text the Boss 302 and or the 302LS the have stubbornly declined …why Ford knows about the 1LE and that its abilities are just as good and better then the uber expensive Boss seires mustangs end of story Ford won’t allow the test because the know what the results will be

  14. Required name for the post; modrod54 the facts are comparing a mustang with the camaro. Mustang weighs 228 lbs less than camaro. Out performs camaro with less cubic inches, 84 to be exact. Yet has more hp, 24 to be exact. Mustang weighs 228 lbs less than camaro but takes 5 ft longer to stop @ 60 mph. Both cars using same size brakes and pads by same manufacturer. Plus mustang uses 373 gear ratio compared to your 391 ratio for the camaro. That is why the math does not add up nor does it match the laws of physics. Yet the camaro can lap VIR quicker. Some one is joking. Ford does not need to send you test car, you would only mislead people with the true facts anyway.

  16. 2013 U S Nationals @ Indy 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang driven by Chris Holbrook CRUSHES 2012 Copo Camaro driven by Dave Connolly. Little 302 ci with 2.7 s/c for factory stock eliminator weighing in @ 3500 lbs. That is 150 lbs more than Copo camaro. 125 CI less. Copo weights 3350 lbs with LS7 427. Even with a 3 tenths head start and red lighting, Holbrook still ran him down. Connolly would have lost even if he had not went red.

  17. Michael Waltrip reveal how simple it is to change the outcome of races in NASCAR. Which is what NASCAR has been doing for years. They are mad because he showed how easy the outcome of races and championships can be change with just a timed caution or piece of trash on the track. NASCAR has been doing this sort of thing since the 80’s if the truth be known.

  18. By the way, I had my facts a little off on the weight of the factory stock cars @ Indy. The copo 427 weights in @ 3000 lbs. Mopar challenger 512 weights in @ 3475 lbs. CJ mustang 302 S/C weights in @ 3675. So that means the CJ gives up 125 C I s to 427 copo, and 675 lbs plus 3 tenths on the index.

  19. LOL at all the mustang fanboys, Talk about sore losers, the new Z/28 just posted a 7:37 at the ring (whit rain).
What are you going to say now?

Ford build the mustang to drive on a straight line, throw an apex in there and all hell brakes lose LOL.

  20. ZL1 10 seconds faster than a 302? pretty sure its not that much, lol.

Lets just look at the fact.
weight and power are about the same between the 1LE and 302 give or take. A second or two difference around a track (even if its true) doesn’t change how someone feels about a car. You either like the ford or the chevy. Personally I think the 302 looks way better.

  21. funny how during the car and driver lightning lap issue the 1LE was only like .5 secs faster than the boss LS, but here it’s almost 5 secs. Same c&D drivers and the GM and Ford are like neck and neck. So, yeah, this is pure crap. Factory Ford driver driving a Boss would easily slash 4-5 secs off the Boss LS time. Nice try.
