The Cadillac XTS And Its Reconfigurable Gauge Cluster: Ad Break

The reconfigurable gauge cluster in the Cadillac XTS offers drivers four different layouts from which to choose, including a more balanced (read: traditional) layout, one that contains less information, a performance-oriented view, as well as an enhanced view. The feature is part of the CUE infotainment system:

  1. They should have different styles and configurations in the app store.

    1. Agreed!! I think CUE should have a developer’s kit similar to Apple’s iOS so that anyone out there could come up with some cool stuff! Even though some people dislike Apple’s approval system for adding new apps to their App Store, I think GM/Cadillac would need the same sort of thing to protect consumers. I don’t want a programmer injecting malicious code into my ATS!

Hope GM keeps innovating and building on this system. This is the future and what is going to get GM and Cadillac back to #1. Hopefully some of this tech starts to trickle down to Buick and eventually Chevy too.

  2. The should let you toggle through different backlight color options, like Ford does with cup holders except with the gauges. I think this looks great as is, but some people like blue, red, or orange better and it would be really simple to do.

    1. I’ll pass on the discotheque-in-my-gauges and wonder how many Cadillac owners would change theirs to a different color…

      1. Alex….discotheque….love it!!!!! Would be a good idea for new Chevy coupe or the like for sure…………………

  3. Even though the XTS isn’t the flagship everyone was hoping for, it’s still a very good car. Much better than some people realize. It has really started the technology increase within Cadillac interiors and according to many magazines and other car reviewers, it rides great and the interior is outstanding. The XTS, on GM Authority and other car magazines, is kind of overlooked because a new flagship is (hopefully) coming and also the very new ATS is arriving. But, with the available all wheel drive, I think the XTS is just as great and a great addition to Cadillacs lineup.

    1. The XTS is indeed a good car. But it would have fit oh-so-much-better as a Buick flagship.

      1. Alex, isn’t the XTS an upscale Buick LaCrosse? I do agree that the XTS fits Buick’s description more than Cadillac’s, but GM needs to put Buick in place. Is it a middle-tier luxury car, or a soft luxury car? It can’t really be both, considering how refined a soft luxury car could really be (Example: the XTS).

Furthermore, I agree. The XTS is a magnificent car when it comes to all around design and technology (let’s leave performance alone). I think of it as a production-concept car. It shows everyone what the future of Cadillac is going to be, while letting them drive it too.

Precisely! This straddling the middle line between the two is becoming annoying.

And yes, the XTS uses the LaCrosse’s platform, but the two behave drive and behave rather differently. Either way, I don’t think the platform sharing aspect matters much as long as the product lives up to expectations/standards. Buick isn’t aspiring to be a performance-oriented brand, so anything FWD will do just fine.

Now, if they could just stretch the Epsilon a little more and add a few inches to the wheelbase, that would be a perfect solution to a Buick flagship.

          1. I saw the XTS on Cadillac lot yesterday…..very pretty…looks so much like the Lacrosse inside….same color combo of brown and cashmere but larger in scale….. I suppose the new Lacrosse will be very similar when the new redesign comes out…..nice car…classy

          2. Alex…..isn’t Buick the old Cadillac? IT is so upscale today….I feel the same sense of quality of luxuery in the new ones I’ve seen and driven….Cadillac still has the sleekest designs and those special touches….but, I can;t see a lot of difference….I will have to drive the new ATS to compare…..I guess the RWD will be biggest difference…..like the way BGM is headed…no more Hondas/imports for me!!!

            1. Dan, Buick is kind of like the old Caddy… at least that’s the direction in which the brand should be headed, in my opinion. Not necessarily in making boats on wheels, but rather in making soft, non-performance-oriented luxury vehicles.

I think the quality, as well as the price, should be the same if not very similar for both, but they currently aren’t, since Buick can’t command high(er) prices right now. Either way, you can’t go wrong — and it will only improve into the future.

              1. Alex………..yes, quality and soft luxury….you are right on! What difference do you see in quality between the two?….I have really looked over the Buicks on the lot and am impressed with everyting I have seen…..I will say the Buicks are nicer than my former DeVille….and it was loaded..genuine wood, leather, heated mirrors, etc…..so, on the right track…….

                1. It’s all in the details. Currently, every base Buick is equipped with cheap cloth seating and very few standard options. At their base levels, Buicks are not far ahead of Chevys.

And that’s the main problem in my book — if Buick is serious about making luxury cars, it should provide luxury standard, not as an option. Such convenient and luxurious elements like leather, keyless entry with push-button start, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, power seats and steering wheels, memory seating… all of these things should be standard in luxury vehicles like Buicks (and of course Cadillacs).

Currently, this is not the case. All base Buicks (and one or two trim levels above base) have very sad levels of luxury features — and also carry a non-luxury price ($23,000 for a Verano, $28,000 for a Regal or a LaCrosse). By contrast, Lexus charges higher prices but also refuses to strip down its cars to cloth and manual seating adjustments (again, this is about providing a base level of luxury standard in a luxury car).

In effect, that’s currently the biggest difference between Buick and its competitors such as Lexus, as well as Buick and Cadillac. And I think this reflects in the public mindset about Buick as a serious luxury brand. I.E. it’s not.

                  1. I agree the base Verano could be dropped and offered as standard in Convenience group and leather options….sunroof available in each level; I personally like the cloth/leatherette….same as having leatherette in ATS as standard, I think…..I also agree that power seating, keyless ignition, etc. should be standard on each model…..well, Buick is on the way and in a year or so should have this all done up in spades

                    Reply
                    1. Right. I don’t mind the leatherette — as most people don’t know or care. But cloth doesn’t have any place in a modern luxury car. I’m with you in that these items should/will get resolved — I just wonder when.

      3. Yes, XTS was very nice….a sandy color….I will look again later but I still didn’t see much difference in quality of finish, paint, etc…..maybe I am missing something. I am excited to see/drive an ATS…..I may buy one next year or the Buick, of course:) I am still a bit spooked after the last Cadillac I had…..so many problems….very questionable quality
