General Motors has announced the appointment of Mark Barnes as Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales of its International Operations (GMIO) — which includes China, among other geographic markets. Barnes is replacing Susan Docherty, who was appointed Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe late last year.
With 30 years of experience, GM is “fortunate to have [Barnes] joining our GMIO team”, said GMIO President Tim Lee.
Barnes holds a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and music from Indiana State University and will be based at the GMIO headquarters in Shanghai. Most recently, he has held the post of Vice President of Customer Experience at Volkswagen of America, and also served as Chief Operating Officer at the same organization. Prior to that, Barnes directed Chrysler’s U.S. and Western Region Business Center and was the Vice President of National Sales at Hyundai North America.
During the first quarter of 2012, GM International Operations reported earnings (before interest and taxes) of $500 million, down $100 million year over year.

Lots of variety in his job experience. What does this really say about the man???
What are you insinuating?
Music degree! Oh good, a real car guy. Guess the cars will have good radios.
Oh c’mon! Having a company run solely by MBAs/Business majors, engineers, and designers often leads to a sheeple mentality, not to mention the fact that over half of college graduates end up in a line of work not even remotely related to their official college education.
And since when does a car guy have to be an engineer? Perhaps all that talk about the value of corpate diversity is actually true…
