The GMAuthority Take
It could be possible that the decrease in Silverado sales in August is a direct result of Chevy’s 8.8 percent cut in fleet sales during the month.
Adding some more context to these figures are the following data points, applicable for the U.S. market:
- Silverado Crew Cab had its best August ever
- Silverado HD had its best August since 2007

Too bad, but not surprising. Event though there were some incentives going on in August, Ford, Dodge (sorry just can’t take the name RAM for a brand seriously) and even Toyota were offering way more cash on the hood than GM when it comes to the full size trucks. I also think Colorado was pulling sales from the 1/2 ton Silverado despite having no real incentives at all.
Silverado has a variety of incentives through 9/30. I just saw a ‘20%-off’ Sierra commercial, so the incentives are out there. But the full-size truck binge seems to be dissipating for everyone.
Colorado and Canyon are still doing well, though.
Sales are down on many vehicles. This may be the beginning of the market slow down that has been predicted.
If so GM has done well to increase the profits and while volumes may go down for everyone the profits will remain up for them.
Also factor in GM normally has a large truck sale every October with large incentives too. May wait for this. My father I law only buys his trucks at this event most years.
GM – We’re ready for something different. The Silverado looks like it’s predecessor and while new, it looks
old – or boring – or more-of-the-same.
Give us some fresh pizazz, a more aero nose and perhaps steeper-canted windscreen. The boxy design with square wheel wells is so 2007.
While you’re at it – a hybrid or PHEV drivetrain is long overdue. Ford’s aluminum hype fell short. The EcoBoost trucks offer 20MPG – zzzzzz…. Not the breakthrough they’ve touted. The 2-Mode trucks and
Tahoes were disappointing and expensive. A nice amount of lithium ion cells fits between traditional truck frame rails ( like the VIA truck ). Add a plug, the Voltec driveline and a nice V-6. Make sure to add outlets so I can power my house with my truck in an outage. Crank them out in volume so the price of the batteries is better and market it in a commercial model for fleet sales and a top-dog model for over $50,000. FORD WILL ABSOLUTELY FREAK OUT! Give us that 72MPG PHEV or 40MPG hybrid truck we have always wanted. You have all the tech right now.
