Opel has a lot to look forward to in the next few years. The brand’s execs still say 2016 could be the year Opel turns a profit, the 2016 Opel Astra will launch and an onslaught of new product and engines are inbound by 2018 to revitalize General Motors’ European branch.
It’s a well timed visit for GM CEO Mary Barra, who will make her first appearance at a European auto show since taking her position, reports Automotive News. Barra will attend the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, where Opel will publicly unveil the 2016 Opel Astra K, a buzz-worthy car for the brand with much riding on its success.
As the report cites, it’s a well timed visit for Barra. Opel gained marketshare for the first time in years in 2014, sales rose during recent months and Opel OnStar is ready to take Europe by storm as an industry first on the continent.
Opel has a ways to go still, however. The brand still bleeds cash, albeit not nearly as much, and the brand lags behind the industry average in growing marketshare. That’s something the 2016 Astra is poised to fix.
