Cadillac To Launch DockSpot Inductive Charging In Select 2015 Model Year Vehicles, According To Dealer Order Guides

General Motors is planning to launch DockSpot, an inductive charging system, in select 2015 model year vehicles, based on new dealership order guides, GM Authority has learned. The feature will allow certain smartphones to be charged inductively (without wires), simply by placing them in a designated place.

The first vehicles to receive DockSpot will be the 2015 Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans, but the feature is scheduled for interim availability during the 2015 model year. Although not mentioned in the order guides, the Chevrolet Volt is likely next in line to receive the feature, possibly followed by the Cadillac ELR and several other models, which are currently undisclosed.

We say this because back in 2011, GM announced inductive charging functionality for the 2012 Chevy Volt. For whatever reason, however, the technology never made its way to market. Even so, GM will be one of the first automakers to make inductive charging available on a production vehicle, providing The General with obvious competitive and mind share advantages.

Stay tuned as we learn more.

  1. This will prove to be popular. I hate all of my wife’s wires. in her car console.

  2. Now this is more like it! More first-in-class features being made available on GM products. Hopefully the Dockspot goes beyond one model year. This is something that’s sure to catch on big time.

  4. This is based on the “Qi” standard for wireless phone charging, which Samsung and others are already selling. The Qi charge base is powered by a 5 VDC USB port, which is easy to add in a car with a 12 VDC to USB charger, so ANYONE can use this now. You need a Qi receiver which can be purchase attached to a new back plate (as Samsung has), or a flat coil insert that fits over the battery. Note: your phone must have the installed contacts or receiver for Qi charging!.

  5. I, too, would hope this would make it way across all products.

I used hook-and-loop tape to hold a charging pad in my truck and added rubber bumpers to hold my BlackBerry in place during, uh hem, more aggressive maneuvers.

(And am I the only person who has difficulties figuring out the letters for the Captcha challenges ??)

    1. You’re not the only one who hates GMA’s worded captchas. Last week none of my posts needed them, but I suppose my streak of luck is over now.

The best thing to do is wait for the numbered captchas. They’re easier to read and less ambiguous, unlike the one I have now (hairy balls).

      1. Folks: the captcha was in place for non-registered users only to prevent many spam comments. We’ve turned it off for everyone just a few minutes ago, but make no promises that it will remain off… since those spam comments can get frequent. In the meantime, we highly recommend you register (it’s free) and log in to comment.

      2. Funny thing about Captchas and re-captchas, some Professors at Carnegie Mellon got wealthy harnessing unsuspecting folks like us to translate for free things that computers and scanners cannot read. Wish I had thought of the idea! Some of the numbered ones seem like mailboxes and home addresses affixed to houses. Could they be using them for adding addresses for google mapping?

The first “known word” gets verified as a test to see if you are human; the second often-blurry word is the one they want you to translate for free. I sometimes put a wrong digit on purpose and it lets me pass through. Sorry if you knew this already….I was blown away when I first learned it.

    1. Yeah, that’s being sold as a mopar accessory, not as a factory included option. Same could be said with wi-fi connectivity/Mobile hot-spot. GM’s had it for 5 or 6 years already, you could by it through gm parts. The Onstar 4G LTE is just an evolution of that.

  8. All the new blackberry 10 phones have this built in, awesome feature to have, plus everything syncs over bluetooth now so you literally just throw your phone into the center console and it charges and syncs without even having to plug it in, which everyone from time to time forgets to do, its awesome!
