When it comes to an “American vehicle,” it’s a widely gray area these days. Some Toyotas are made in America. Some Volkswagens are made in America. Oppositely, some Chevrolets that are sold here are made in Korea and Mexico. It’s easy to see that these days it goes beyond where the brand is from, and many will argue that some of the most “American” vehicles are Toyotas and Hondas due to their American-made parts content. But according to international business professor Frank DuBois and his annual “Made in America Auto Index,” American brand vehicles took this year’s top rankings. And not just any American vehicles, but iconic ones.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray and outgoing Ford F-150 pickup are both quintessentially American cars. Few other vehicles can be described as such (perhaps the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Crown Victoria and GM SUVs could find themselves in that category). And because they tied with a score 87.5 each in the 100-point index, they have to share this year’s crown as the most ‘Merican motoring machine.
Last year, it was GM’s Lambda platform large crossovers.

Murica!!
So an F150, along with being more cutting edge, and less expensive than a new GM full size truck, also has more than twice the American components. Sierra / Silverado are right at 40 % American made parts. Your tax dollars at work.
You have the choice between a Mexico built crew cab with a 4.3L pushrod V6, or you could go buy an American built F150 with an Ecoboost for less. How is again that Ford sells more trucks?! Maybe some people are better at math and common sense than those bozo decision makers at GM.
Define “American “
I don’t know why you’re still getting hung up on where the factories are. You’re coming off as xenophobic, unless that is your intent.
Because it isn’t Mexican tax money that is keeping this Dinosaur alive.
Again, you can buy a better product for less that is USA made, or pay more for an inferior one built in Mexico. Do I need to draw a picture?
If you would like lol… WHATEVER you think it’s convenient lol….. Because I do hope you know that there is a factory in Texas that builts these trucks as well.
Gotcha. You’d only own a car that came from a country that you would live in or otherwise visit. You wouldn’t want a car from a country that you look down upon; either because their GDP is lower, or if the vehicle was made by brown people.
Better start drawing that picture, because you’re not putting up a good case to reject cars made in another country.
The origin of a vehicle is the origin of the manufacturer, not the assembly origin. Toyota is still a Japanese brand, even if assembled in America. The Chevy Spark is made in South Korea but the plant belongs to GM, so it is an American branded car. My Equinox was assembled in Canada with a Chinese engine and a Japanese transaxle, but it is American. Car manufacturing is global, so the origin of the parts will never decide what is “American”, only the brand owner!
the tahoe and yukon rated 5th and the gmc sierra and chevy silverado truck rated 22nd, not sure they are that much different, not sure what to think of this survey ?
Those models you mentioned share no body panels, or interior appointments, so I would guess those parts are more USA made on the Tahoe and less so on the trucks.
I have one of each!!! Go America!
Today it is more about where the money goes vs. where it is built. There are no more vehicles with 100% parts from one country anymore.
Hell We have Australian cars with American motors and American cars built in Mexico with German engines and American parts.
This is a pissing match with no end.
I wonder how much of the new Fords body will be American as Canada is one of the largest Aluminum body part suppliers.
