Old pickups like the Chevy C10 were originally manufactured to be simple workhorses with a singular goal – get the job done, whatever that job may be. However, it’s that simplicity that opens up these old rigs to a plethora of custom possibilities, including performance. Now, we’re checking out one homebuilt 1966 Chevy C10 that was upgraded from the ground up to be a high-speed thrill machine.
The truck’s owner, Clay, originally purchased this 1966 Chevy C10 at the age of 16 as a rough Montana farm truck for just $800. Over the years, Clay has meticulously upgraded this vintage classic while preserving its aged patina, blending old school looks with modern engineering.
At its foundation, the Chevy retains its original chassis, rear axle, and trailing arms, but now rides on Custom Performance Products (CPP) coils, QA1 dampers, and disc brakes with modern spindles to enhance handling and braking, balancing performance and a relatively vintage feel.
Under the hood, the build gets a bit serious. Motivation is sourced from a Texas Speed 408-cubic-inch stroker engine with premium internals, including TSP’s Stage 4 camshaft, an upgraded valve train, and ported 243 cylinder heads. Coupled with a Holley High Ram EFI system, the engine produces an impressive 625 horsepower at the crank and about 500 horsepower at the wheels. Power is delivered via a Cadillac CTS-V six-speed transmission to a Yukon rear end fitted with 3.43 gears.
Custom fabrication abounds in the build, including a modified firewall, hand-crafted exhaust headers, and an efficient aluminum cooling system. Rolling on Detroit Steel Ambassador wheels with a squared 315 setup, the truck’s patina has been intentionally accelerated, adding to its rugged charm.
Inside, the truck continues the theme of modern performance and functionality with a custom roll cage, custom pedals, and race bucket seats. There’s even a hidden audio system with 12 speakers.
Put it all together, and this 1966 Chevy C10 is brimming with impressive details and style. Check it out for yourself right here:
