The Pontiac Sunbird was produced between 1975 and 1994, adopting the J2000 / 2000 name for its second generation in the early ‘80s. Offered as an affordable compact / subcompact with a dash of sporty attitude, it’s relatively rare to find a clean example these days. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what we have right here, as seen in a new online auction.
This particular example is a 1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird LE Convertible, finished in Bright Red paint and matched with a white power soft top and gray cloth upholstery. Showing approximately 40,100 miles, this Sunbird is surprisingly in well-kept condition, with the only modification being an aftermarket aluminum radiator.
Motivation is sourced from a 1.8L I4 engine, which was rated at 84 horsepower and 102 pound-feet of torque when new. The four-cylinder is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
Other notable features include 13-inch steel wheels with wire-spoke covers, power windows and locks, air conditioning, cruise control, an AM / FM cassette radio, and a tilt steering column. The sale also includes the window sticker from its original purchase, showing an original selling price of $14,197. The Carfax report indicates no accidents, though there are some reporting gaps. A minor mileage discrepancy noted in 2018 is believed to be a clerical error, which has been addressed by the selling dealer.
Recent service history includes a battery replacement in June of 2024, a fuel pump and filter replacement in July of 2020, and other regular maintenance, such as oil changes, brake system bleeding, and A/C recharging.
Per the listing, the vehicle shows a little wear, including exterior paint imperfections, discoloration on the front Pontiac emblem, and some wear on the interior upholstery, but overall, the car is in pretty good shape.
Now, this clean 1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird Convertible is up for grabs at Cars & Bids and is offered at no reserve. The current highest bid as of this writing (9/6/2024) is set at $2,500.

Js were the most miserable driving cars. Brother had a Cavalier and later a Sunbird convertible. They drive like agricultural equipment.
I would totally disagree.
Back in 1985 my parents purchased a brand new Cavalier sedan with auto and the CL trim. Fantastic little car. As a young boy, I wanted more sporty and ended up with a 1987 Z24 which was a very fun car. Remember, this was in a time when other cars were not a nice as today. At that same time, my buddy had a 1982 or 1983 Honda Accord and the Cavalier Sedan was very competitive IMO.
Today I have the fanciest Cavalier they ever made: A 1988 Cadillac Cimarron with 61,000 miles. It’s very reliable and nice to drive even by today’s standards.
Our family enjoyed three Cavaliers and passed on owning the Sunbirds because of the funky engines seemed unique to Pontiac. We enjoyed our Fiero and all of the GMs ran reliably, efficiently and were fun and affordable. Still driving Chevrolet Cruzes and a Volt. So well made!
In 1986/87 I was riding a motorcycle around the north LA area. Stopped at a stop light, looked over and there was Sam Elliot (the actor) in the lane next to me driving a red Chevy Cavalier convertible. I did a double take just to be sure. Yep, it was him.
Can’t say that I would not have pictured him in a Chevy Cavalier convertible but to each his own.
