At first glance, this 1953 Chevy Bel Air appears to be a classic cruiser, boasting a timeless design with just a few modern touches, like a low stance and air suspension. However, a closer look reveals a surprise under the hood, namely a turbocharged Toyota 2JZ engine, famously known for powering the fourth-generation A80 Toyota Supra. Now, this unique Chevy-Toyota hybrid is listed for sale in Canada, offering a blend of American vintage style and Japanese performance.
Flying under the clever social media handle @bel_error, this ’53 Bel Air is definitely not your typical restomod. The Toyota 2JZ engine, celebrated for its immense power potential, famously starred under the hood of the hero Supra in the first The Fast and the Furious movie back in 2001. In factory form, this 3.0L inline-six engine produces 320 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque, but has a reputation for achieving well over 1,000 horsepower with a stock bottom end and a big aftermarket turbo, making it a legend in the tuner world.
In this particular application, the 2JZ is paired with a Toyota automatic transmission and linked to an open driveline conversion featuring 3.73 gearing sourced from a 1973 Chevy Camaro. This setup is complemented by a full air suspension and a four-link rear end, as well as power steering and a front disc brake conversion, all necessary bits to keep it relatively modern.
Visually, there’s no obvious indication of what’s providing the motivation. This Bel Air rides low on a set of simple Centerline wheels, while the cabin features Autometer gauges and a Bluetooth stereo system.
It’s definitely a unique setup, and now this Toyota-powered Chevy Bel Air is up for grabs with an asking price of CA$22,000, or roughly US$16,250 at current exchange rates. The question is – is it worth the price?
