Although the first antilock braking systems (more commonly known as ABS) were developed in the early 20th century, the technology didn’t become a standard feature for passenger vehicles until the early ’90s. However, the system couldn’t arrive soon enough. For those that don’t know, ABS enables the driver to continue to steer their vehicle, even when standing on the stoppers in a panic and locking up the front wheels. Unfortunately for the driver in the Chevy Chevelle featured in the following video, there was no ABS in place to save the day.
The video is only a few seconds long, capturing the moment the driver loses control and damages the classic muscle car. The video was posted to the @atlmuscle Instagram feed, suggesting this particular incident occurred in Atlanta, Georgia.
In the video, we see a darkening sky, likely around sunset. The video appears as though it was captured by an onlooker on the sidewalk. As the video gets under way, we see the Chevelle headed down the street towards the camera. The lights on the muscle car are switched on. The car is colored in gray paint and has a dual set of black racing stripes running down the center.
Although there isn’t much to indicate what was happening before the clip starts, it looks as though the Chevelle was speeding. The video starts with the tail end of the muscle car pitching out, possibly due to a loss of traction while flooring the throttle. As the car gets sideways, the driver lifts off the throttle, opting to slam on the brakes. This results in the car spearing off straight towards the curb in a cloud of tire smoke. It was at this moment that ABS may have saved the day by allowing the car to turn away from the curb.
We see another individual on the sidewalk capturing a video with their phone, running away at the last second. Luckily, the Chevelle bounces off the curb, but definitely could have hopped over the curb and smashed into the individual taking the video. We see the wheel on the Chevelle is damaged, but overall, the impact could have been a lot worse. The driver quickly drives away, clearly embarrassed by the accident.

I bet he owned a Mustang previously before the purchase of the Chavelle.
More power isn’t always a good thing, especially if the driver isn’t able to handle it! Lucky all it did (so it seems) is to bend the right front rim but did not blow the right front tire out! Not too sure about the front suspension components though, I’d think a front end alignment might be in order. Luck was riding with this driver, this could have been a very expensive boo-boo
should the Chevelle have jumped the curb and proceeded into a tree or worse, a house! Lesson learned I’m betting.
