Two NASCAR Chevy teams have been penalized following last weekend’s races at Darlington. This includes the No. 1 Chevy Camaro SS in the Xfinity Series and the No. 2 Chevy Silverado RST in the Truck Series, both of which were called out in NASCAR’s penalty report on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024.
The No. 1 Camaro, which is driven by Sam Mayer in the Xfinity Series, finished fourth at Darlington on May 11th. However, this team was hit with an L1-level penalty for violating Sections 14.3.1.4 A in the NASCAR Rule Book, which refers to Inspection Re-Certification. After the race, it was discovered that the No. 1 NASCAR Chevy team made a change to the race car that would have required it to be recertified prior to the event. At this time, NASCAR officials have not disclosed the specifics of the infraction.
As a result, 10 driver and 10 owner points were deducted from the No. 1 NASCAR Chevy team. Crew chief Marten Lindley was fined $10,000 and suspended from the next Xfinity Series event, which will take place on May 25th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. At this time, JR Motorsports, the team that fields this entry for Mayer, has not indicated if it will attempt to appeal the penalty.
Meanwhile, the No. 2 Silverado of Nick Sanchez was also penalized. After the Truck Series race on May 10th, the team was found to be in violation of Sections 14.3.1.2 A & B & D, which specifically refers to Crew Protective Clothing/Equipment. Officials suspended No. 2 NASCAR Chevy tire carrier Jerick Newsome from the next Truck Series event, scheduled for May 18th at North Wilkesboro Speedway. NASCAR has not yet disclosed the specifics of this violation, either.
It’s worth noting that Matt Crafton’s No. 88 Ford F-150 was also penalized for a Crew Protective Clothing/Equipment violation, and one crewmember was suspended for this weekend’s Truck Series race.
