General Motors announced that the Chevy Onix Plus continues to be the most fuel-efficient car in Brazil, where once again the low fuel consumption of Chevrolet‘s successful subcompact vehicle has been recognized by local authorities.
The Chevy Onix Plus led the ranking of the most efficient cars in Brazil in the 2023 edition of Programa Brasileiro de Etiquetajem Veicular (PBEV), recently published by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro, for its acronym in Portuguese) of South American country. As such, it’s the fourth consecutive year that the sedan variant of the second-generation Onix has been classified as the most fuel-efficient ICE car in Brazilian market.
According to the Brazilian state agency report, the base 2023 Chevy Onix Plus with the 1.0L naturally aspirated engine boasts a certified fuel consumption of 17.5 km/l or 41.2 mpg on the highway using gasoline, and 12.4 km/l or 29.2 mpg with ethanol. In addition, the Onix sedan also had the highest fuel economy in the turbocharged engine category, consuming 16.9 km/l or as high as 39.8 mpg on the highway.
“We are managing to drastically reduce the emissions of our combustion vehicles,” said Product Engineering General Director of GM South America, Ricardo Fanucchi. “The combination of a low-consumption engine, low-friction tires and bearings, aerodynamic bodywork, electric-assisted steering, an electrical load management system, as well as an optimized calibration of propulsion system as well as application of high-strength materials to mass reduction are what guarantee a much more efficient functioning of the whole,” he added.
Brazil’s PBEV has been in force for more than a decade and is coordinated by Inmetro in partnership with the agencies Conpet, Ibama, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of the Environment and Cetesb. The program manages the information on fuel consumption, energy efficiency as well as classification of vehicles and CO2 emissions, working as a reference for consumers to make their purchasing decisions.
This new Chevy Onix Plus recognition as the most fuel-efficient car in Brazil further consolidates the model’s reputation in the country, where the Onix nameplate has led overall sales by a wide margin in recent years. It also joins the strong showing of the all-new 2023 Chevy Montana in the rankings, achieving the lowest fuel consumption in its segment and the only one in its class to receive Inmetro’s CONPET seal of energy efficiency.

That is a very attractive little car. I think it’s a little nicer looking than the last gen Cruze we had here. I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to make a few changes and sell it here to replace the Spark. Keep it simple with a base and LT trim with the same basic features the Spark had (LS and LT). Offer it with 5 speed manual or 6 speed auto, keep the price below 20 grand and gain some younger/newer customers.
Wish Chevy still sold cars in the US. I don’t like SUVs, for the most part, so am now drawn to Honda.
There is still the Malibu available to the North American market! Possibly a new version could be here for 2025.
Nice looking little car.
Legalized marijuana seems to generate high comments. The new GM is about maximizing profits, not selling s–t boxes.
It seems every country on the planet gets the better example of a gm product than the united states does ! Maybe its just me !
That is because everyone here wants an SUV or large pickup…or that is what GM is convinced of. That is why we wont get sedans anymore. Same thing with EV’s…the automakers are convinced that everyone wants an electric car, so the ICE cars are slowly going away in favor of battery-powered mini-crossovers. I agree with a lot of people, this is a nice looking car and would have been a good Cruze replacement, and would sell well in the right price range. Not everyone is looking for a $40,000 crossover…I would scoop up the Onix if it was in the $20,000 range.
scott Jakubin: It’s not just you. Many of us feel the same.
tim: Apparently GM and Ford know what us buyer want more than we do. haha. I was never a big Ford guy, but I’ve had several new Lincolns, one Mercury and several Fords all new. Only one of them was a truck (2003 Ranger). Everything else was a car. So at this point, Ford will never get one dime out of my pocket any more, or at least until they offer a car again. For GM, there’s still some hope although I feel they put the screws to Buick in a huge way. So for me, it’s Chevy or Cadillac as long as they offer me a sedan or smaller hatch. But this Onix would make a fantastic small/cheap sedan and hatch for here.
With the past:cars prices were high that so many shoppers go to the dealership showroom to buy just a regular sedan (no Cadillac or Lincoln, here)but then, they walked out of the dealership showroom, empty handed, only to realize, something that cost five thousand ending to be forty eight thousand, and the usual line; forget it! Its out of our price range, but then buying a new SUV is going to be the toss up who could REALLY afford it remember you could not buy a SUV for the price of a car, that is about seven to ten thousand dollars or even less so by all means for buyers who want a car that is always affordable and the ride is less harsh unlike a truck.
