Chevy Blazer Sales Nearly Doubled In Q2 2020

Chevy Blazer sales increased in the United States and Canada, while decreasing in Mexico during the second quarter of 2020.

In the United States, Chevrolet Blazer deliveries totaled 19,726 units in Q2 2020, an increase of about 68 percent compared to 11,772 units sold in Q2 2019.

In the first six months of the year, Blazer sales increased about 183 percent to 41,870 units.

Chevrolet Blazer Sales - Q2 2020 - Canada

In Canada, Chevrolet Blazer deliveries totaled 954 units in Q2 2020, an increase of about 53 percent compared to 623 units sold in Q2 2019.

In the first six months of the year, Blazer sales increased about 123 percent to 1,597 units.

Chevrolet Blazer Sales - Q2 2020 - Mexico

In Mexico, Chevrolet Blazer deliveries totaled 145 units in Q2 2020, a decrease of about 56 percent compared to 328 units sold in Q2 2019.

In the first six months of the year, Blazer sales decreased about 17 percent to 453 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevy Blazer sales experienced healthy growth in Q2 2020, and the 68 percent growth seems all the more impressive given the COVID-ridden Q2 2020. The performance enabled the Blazer to move ahead in its competitive set.

Notably, the Camaro-inspired SUV jumped from 17th place in its segment in Q2 2019 to ninth in Q2 2020. It was outsold by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, the Blazer’s larger brother – the Chevrolet Traverse, along with the Ford Edge and Kia Sorento.

On a segment share basis, the Blazer accounted for 5 percent segment share, well behind the 12 percent share each held by the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer. The Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot accounted for 8 percent each, while the Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Traverse accounted for 6 percent each. The Ford Edge and Kia Sorento accounted for 5 percent each, much like the Blazer.

The mainstream mid- and full-size crossover segments, comprised of CUVs with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, was fell 24 percent to 386,879 units in Q2 2020.

Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating like the Blazer, the Chevy offering came in mid-pack. It was outsold by the Jeep Grand Cherokee (by around 26,000 units), the Hyundai Santa Fe (by approximately 4,000 units) and the Ford Edge (by about 1,300 units). Even so, the Chevrolet crossover closed the gap with all three rivals, as they posted declines in sales volume. The Blazer outsold two models – the the segment stalwart Nissan Murano as well as the Honda Passport newcomer.

The Blazer’s share of the midsize, two-row CUV segment improved more than two-fold to 15 percent, well behind the 35 percent held by the Grand Cherokee but within reach of the 18 and 16 percent held by the Santa Fe and Edge, respectively. It was also well ahead of the 11 and 6 percent held by the Murano and Passport.

The mainstream mid-size, two-row crossover segment contracted 23 percent to 133,113 units during the second quarter of 2020.

The GM Authority Take

There are various headwinds working against the commercial success of the new Chevy Blazer, such as limited availability caused by an idling of GM North America production due to COVID-19. The GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico that assembles the vehicle was no stranger to this idling, though the facility has reopened in late May. Additionally, the Blazer (along with most other vehicles) are seeing stifled demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even so, Chevy Blazer sales performance during Q2 2020 is still quite impressive, and the vehicle continues to gain in sales volume and share. We believe that the new crossover will have even more success once the economy and supply normalize.

  • Live to dream.. using the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer as the starting point for a next generation El Camino.

  • Great to hear sales went up. I personally know of three people within the last 12 months that passed on the Blazer even though they really liked it due to so many Hard Plastics in the interior. Felt that for 50K the interior was a complete joke.
    One got a VW Atlas Cross Sport and the other two got the Honda Passport.

    • You nailed the problem in general with Chevrolet: inadequate bang for buck!
      It has to be this way, Chevrolet must always cut corners, to justify GMC and Buick! Chevy should be offering Kia or Jeep quality materials with a wider array of creature comforts since Buick will never again be a major US player but instead The General loses sales by only offering these perks in Enclave or the beautiful new Envision.
      VW is often criticized for VW brand and Skoda cannibalizing sales. I argue that the competition between these two brands probably overall bring more shoppers to the company there depriving sales to brands like Opel.
      GM should copy VW regardless of what CNBC talking heads say!

      • I totally agree. I am sick of GM giving Chevrolet lackluster interior materials for their cars to protect GMC and Buick. How about you just make each and every interior as great as possible. Perfect example is a close look at the Silverado interior and the Sierra one.
        GM themselves say that most shoppers do not cross shop between Chevy and GMC so why the lesser interior on the Chevy version?

        GMC should offer great interior materials as well as Chevrolet. The interiors should be completely different though. Just like the Nox and Terrain are. Or the Acadia to Traverse were.

        Buick should offer Cut and Saw materials in the Avenir line. Won't cannibalize Cadillac as the Cadillac Brand should offer Materials like real Knurled Metals and woods that Buick cannot offer at their price. Also Cadillac needs to be Ultra Superior in Tech.

        This isn't hard GM....I have been stating just how important interiors are to current Customers but forget about me, lets all remember that Bob Lutz basically was shouting as loud as he could about better interior materials for GM vehicles. It was extremely important back then but even more so right now.

        25/30 year old Kia Brand should not make your cars look like they belong on the Market of Third World Countries when compared to their vehicles.

        I know GM can do it with Chevrolet. The new Tahoe and C8 are proof. Now just do that for every vehicle line ASAP.

  • i believe it sell good because the front looks so good, now just do that front on the Camaro and it will sell good also, get rid of the Camaro clown face, i hate it and I'm a Camaro guy.!!!

  • Volkswagen are known for maintenance issues. Several friends bought and returned or traded. The young or the status buy them. A version of Audi. One was a Passant with multiple dash lights and hard turning. Dealer couldn't fix, so they bought it back. Probably on the used lot now. The other was a Jetta, suspension issues, traded for a Japanese car.
    As for the Passport, it's in a different class with the Traverse. Traverse hands down...IMO

    • You are proving my point exactly. Customers will overlook so called long term VW issues per say because they're interiors are just so much better than the Competition. Proves exactly what I have been saying on this site for many years. Most customers want the latest in Tech and the absolute best interior their money can get them. And that is just not Chevrolet as of right now. Chevy has the absolute worst interior materials in the business except new Tahoe and C8. All other Chevy Models are hard AF Plastics that are borderline embarrassing when compared to their Segments.

      Also Passport is in the Blazer segment. Pilot is Traverse Segment.

    • So... what happened to the 'superior' Honda Passport sales? All this blabbering about '50k for a Chevy, no way!' was just that, blabbering. On can easily spec out a Blazer for much less than $50,000. The Passport was the auto rag's favorite.

      • Those trolls take themselves too seriously when it comes to trashing GM products.... Now, they are all riding the bandwagon of the super amazing luxury Telluride and Palisade, lol.... The same people that claimed the XT6 Caddy won't sell are the same trolls claiming the Blazer will be a flop. Then they disappear when the numbers come out and move on to next GM product to troll.

        The Blazer will continue to gain traction and it's a big hit with many consumers. The trolls will continue proclaiming the Telluride and Palisade to be the vehicles of the century and blindly worship those two vehicles and anything Toyota/Honda like the usual.

  • All I know is that if Chevrolet vehicles had better interior materials, they wouldn't have to cancel all their Sedans like they have. I will believe that the Malibu gets a new version when I see it.
    Why isn't Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, and Honda cancelling their Sedans and instead are offering Brand New Models as we speak?
    Stop making excuses for GM. That doesn't make you a bigger GM fan than others on this site that can point out issues that GM needs to be better at. If we do not point these things out who will?
    The number os sales are all relevant. Let me know how our amazing GM is doing in the Coasts. If GM ever loses the Midwest they might as well close shop. I live in the Midwest and I am telling you that a lot of NON GM Fans will go and try out a GM vehicle because they like their exterior designs (best in the industry in my humble opinion) but they just cannot get passed the almost laughable Chevrolet interiors. GM would be selling so many more vehicles if they just stop being cheap and get with the program.
    I am not an Auto expert in selling cars but in my humble opinion a Company cannot be totally dependent on selling ONLY in the Midwest and China. Where are the European and Coastal US sales?

    • You are comparing companies that compete on very different global scales. GM does not have hands in many of the markets that the Asian brands do. Hyundai/Kia Subaru, Honda can afford to keep sedans because they sell them in markets where they are still popular. The Accord is a flagship vehicle of Japan. The U.S. has shifted to demand crossovers, trucks, and SUVs. Sedans do not scale so well for a domestic brand. Sure, GM could improve materials. At the same time, this bandwagon of expecting handcrafted luxury from mainstream brands has gone a bit too far. Think of how far EVERY interior has improved in the last 15 years. Just hoping to give you some alternative perspective. The world is more than the midwestern U.S.

  • Mary Bara is a GOD. All women must be given management positions because they are women. So what if Mary could not tell the difference between a Chevy and Cadillac or why there should be a difference. She is so talented, and so fashion forward with car design - GM boasts the best designs of all competitors! May she turn GM into her dream reality - a company of soy boys and frumpy women making cars out of recyclable bean sprouts.

  • I hear what you're saying... I did some contract work for a company that sold interior parts to the auto industry and guess what...lots of different logos. The difference, thickness and pliability of the materials. Some adhesives with thin foam to prevent squeaking and some came with foam backing. But again, different logos.

    Don't get fooled. How many commercials have you seen exploiting interior...other than Lincoln. And too the higher cost for that interior. You want better interior $$$$$$$
    Not me... I'm good with the middle of the road stuff. My 35k - 42k Traverse vs a 65k - 85k European or over priced Japanese logo, no, I am good. My athletic kids and friends can ride in my Traverse w/o worring about a 75k leather vehicle, unless it's just plain surburbanite status...be my guest. Don't encourage the cost to go up just to ride to the grocery store or mall, football practice or dance lessons.

    I do agree that Cadillac should be the leader and in most cases, are with technology. In the 80's GM put infra-red sensors in the grill that detect deer or humans entering the sights with visual red bodies of deer or humans on the dash. No one wanted it at time and it was scrubbed. You get bits of it today, in my Traverse as humans get close I get the signal.
    Same for today's shocks, in the 50s and 80s GM used the electromagnetic sensing to either soft or rides.

    There are hundreds that GM was the first in technology now both the Japanese and Koreans are advertising.

    Anyway...my 2 cents
