The Cadillac Escala concept is the third entrant into the brand’s string of Pebble Beach debuts, which began with the Cadillac Ciel convertible and followed up by the Cadillac Elmiraj.
The Escala has certainly proved worthy of a Pebble Beach debut with positive reactions from most of you, however, we still don’t have a clear picture as to if something like the Escala’s liftback design will one day be a flagship for the brand.
But, we digress. Today, we’re here with another detailed look at the Escala concept, provided by Andrew Smith, Cadillac Design Director. Smith walks us through the ins and outs of the design, explaining the progression the design team took.
The exterior certainly previews Cadillac’s new face, featuring a new take on the Art & Science motif’s vertical headlamps and muscular grille. In the rear, it’s a classic Cadillac look, and Smith even points out a slight Easter Egg, harkening back to the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado.
Inside, the driver is situated with the latest OLED technologies and a position which beckons the vehicle to be driven. However, in the rear, it’s all about the riding experience.
Have a look and a listen in the video right up above. And if that’s not enough, have a look at our rankings of Cadillac’s modern-day concept cars right here.

I was not sure of the car from the start, but this design has grown on me and I can say if this(which I think it will) is the upcoming flagship then I am happy. Its long, lean, wide, and sophisticated looking without being too over the top.
A car like this will be a perfect flagship to sit above the CT6 and people will take notice of Cadillac again with a ultra luxury car of this magnitude. With all that being said I also think if the flagship is either a mid engined performance car or a huge SUV/CUV, then Cadillac is going to lose most of its fan base.
Hopefully they get it right and bring out a car that resonates through out the entire brand and helps sales.
Given that the design cues for concept cars like the Escala will be integrated in future production cars and the fact that it’s too soon to do a refresh on Cadillac’s CT6; one has to wonder whether the next generation ATS and CTS will be the first to feature the new Cadillac design language.
Pure style this car, beautiful exercise of modern and simple luxury
Looks like the new Infinity. Geez, wonder why?
I like many elements, concepts within the concept of this concept car. I don’t think that these elements, however, flow together well as was the case with Ciel, or even Buick Avista (by far the most clean and confident concept produced by GM in more than a generation and an offering that should have been reserved for Cadillac).
I’ve read that there is a struggle for the soul of Cadillac between Mark Reuss and Johan; this is a compromise offering that demonstrates such friction.
Mark Adams should be given control of Cadillac. Aside from the Avista kids he is the most talented designer at GM.
Reuss needs to win vs. jdN, otherwise Cadillac is just another Euro-imitator. Reuss understands Cadillac as an American car, and doesn’t see a need for Cadillac to match the Europeans car-for-car (i.e. no tiny “entry level” Cadillacs required). Adams is a great designer but Cadillac needs to be about more than just design.
I agree with you.. And also that there is a internal struggle between these two men. I read about this earlier this year in Car and Driver and it actually was a fight over how the flagship sedan should look.
the sloping rear roof will take out rear head room and it looks too European….Cadillac needs the iconic upright rooflines.
Absolutely stunning automobile. So was the Buick Avenir. Sadly, neither will ever be built.
