Vauxhall Ellesmere Port Facility Could Shutter If Britain Leaves The European Union

Liverpool Mayor, Joe Anderson, offered a gloomy reality to Brexit campaigners ahead of next week’s referendum vote to stay, or leave, the European Union.

According to The Chester Chronicle, production is feared to move to Germany of Spain should Britain exit the EU.

“General Motors have factories in Spain and Germany, the idea that they are going to be willing to pay tariffs to carry on making cars in Ellesmere Port and keep the workforce here is unrealistic. They will simply close the factory and move production to Spain or Germany,” Mayor Anderson stated.

“Investment comes to our city region because businesses knows we have access to the single market,” he added.

General Motors has already been clear a British exit from the single market would be “undesirable,” refusing to rule out a closure should new tariffs be levied on British goods.

Nearly 1,700 people are employed at the Ellesmere Port assembly, which has been responsible for seven generations of Vauxhall Astra at 150,000 vehicles per year.

  1. Joe Anderson is talking crap as usual, the automatic assumption by the remain campaigners in the UK that there would be any tariffs one way or the other is highly speculative and in no way a certainty.

  2. Joe Anderson is following logic in his argument especially as General Motors has decided to build factories in China to keep from needing to pay high tariffs on vehicles imported and not built in China; thus, if the European Union slaps tariffs on Vauxhall vehicles then General Motors will need to consider moving production to an EU country to keep the tariffs from offsetting any profits.
