The Cadillac F1 team is officially headed for the Formula One World Championship grid in 2026, having been formally approved on November 25th, 2024 after a rollercoaster journey to get there. Thus far, the GM-backed team’s driver lineup has been kept under wraps, but a possible name has emerged from the rumor mill, suggesting Mick Schumacher could be headed back to F1 with Cadillac.
Schumacher has been linked to the forthcoming Cadillac F1 team, according to a report from Sports Illustrated. Schumacher formerly raced for Haas F1 Team, which is based in the United States, until the team parted ways with him upon conclusion of the 2022 season.
Schumacher wasn’t able to secure a fulltime ride in F1 in 2023 or 2024, but hasn’t strayed far from the racing scene, competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Alpine in 2024 while serving as reserve driver for Mercedes in F1. He was also in talks with Sauber, but the seat ultimately went to Gabriel Bortoleto, who will partner with Nico Hulkenberg in 2025.
Ralf Schumacher, former F1 driver himself, said that while there’s a strong possibility that his nephew Mick Schumacher could be picked up by the Cadillac F1 team, it’s not unlikely that the organization will consider an American driver first. Mick Schumacher, after all, is a native German.
“I’m pretty sure they’ll rely on American talent,” Ralf Schumacher said, adding, “It will of course take some time, but General Motors is a huge corporation and whatever they tackle will work in the end.”
Mario Andretti, director on the Cadillac F1 team board, said that the organization is interested in securing existing F1 talent along with a young American driver.
No matter who’s behind the wheel, when the Cadillac F1 race car finally rolls out for its first laps of competition, it will likely be powered by a Ferrari engine. GM will begin production of its own power units by the end of the decade, which will officially make the team a “full works” outfit.

A famous name does not make a great driver
If they want an established F1 driver for one of the two seats, Bottas or Magnussen make much more sense.
