Son Of The Year Gets Dad “His” Old Pontiac GTO: Video

It’s hard not to tear-up watching this touching family moment, as a son gifts his father a Pontiac GTO identical to the 1968 example that he’d bought as a 16 year-old.

The father in the video is just turning 60. Sometime prior to his birthday, he and his wife had found photos of his old 1968 Pontiac GTO, unearthing some misty-eyed, nostalgic memories of the times had in the car. The man’s son was so moved by this that he decided to purchase and restore an identical GTO – green with a black vinyl top – to give to him on his birthday.

We love watching the palpable look of surprise and awe when the father is brought around front to see his birthday gift. He has a beautifully moving reaction, and we can feel how overwhelmed he is at that moment of revelation. For the son’s giving the gift of priceless, sentimental motoring memories, we elect him Son of the Year 2015 (not a real award).

(Editor’s note: I wish I could leave it at that – it is a truly beautiful moment when this man sees “his” old classic Pontiac pony car, living and breathing in the driveway. However, the vast majority of the YouTube comments are irksome, to say the least. Most of them center on blasting the family for all recording the moment on their phones and tablets, and on fantasizing about violent retribution toward the 3 year-old boy who “ruined the surprise.”

How people on the internet feel so empowered by their anonymity as to make horrific threats toward a toddler is beyond me, but how about this: it’s a lovely moment. You are a fly on the wall, fortunate enough to be able to witness it. Shut up, and enjoy a genuine, heartwarming video with a gorgeous car.)
