2014 Chevy Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle Gets Updates & Changes: RPO Central

General Motors is making a few changes and updates to the 2014 Chevy Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV). For starters, the 2014 Caprice PPV loses the Alto Grey Metallic exterior color and sunglass holder (surely, many police offers will miss both), the floor-mounted shift lever, as well as the 8-way power driver and front passenger seat adjustments.

Meanwhile, the AM/FM stereo with CD player is replaced with a 7″ color touchscreen Chevrolet MyLink radio with Bluetooth, and the 600 cold-cranking amps (CCA) auxiliary battery is replaced by a unit with 100 more. Electric Power Steering (EPS) replaces power rack-and-pinion steering and the associated power steering oil cooler, and 6-way power seat adjusters replace 8-way units. There’s a new instrument cluster, a folder blade key fob (love those!), a new inside rearview mirror with manual day/night switch, and a circuit to integrate Surveillance Mode.

The updates, which are rounded out by several RPO-level changes, put the 2014 Caprice PPV in line with the updated 2014 Holden WN Caprice, which itself was updated at the same time as the freshened VF Commodore.

  1. Do BOTH models lose the floor mounted shifter, or just the Patrol version? I know the detective car had the floor mounted piece.

    1. Their is no 9C3 for 2014, the dept can order them how the want them.

  2. My understanding is 9C3 loses the floor mounted shifter as well. I haven’t gotten a 100% clear answer though, from what I’ve heard the 9C3 spec is going to mimic 9C1 on the interior to cut costs.

Both prior-gen PPV’s had a floor mounted shifter. This gives much more room to mount utilities and firearms.

Of course, for those of us eyeing one as an SS alternative, this isn’t great news. It feels way too W body… and I so don’t miss driving W body vehicles.

That all said, I’m not too sad. The all-flat center console could make for some interesting integrations and hacks that you couldn’t do with a normal car.

P.S. MyLink and Bluetooth make the Caprice oh so much more consumer friendly. It even got the sunglass holder that the ’14 Malibu handed off to the Caprice. GM, please green light this for consumer orders… even low-profile, no-demo-unit, drop-ship-only sale. I’ll buy one.

  3. Follow-up, clarified. 9C3 is gone as a trim. 9C1 has inherited 9C3’s options for the most part, and there was very low demand for it to begin with.

Which, I can understand. With Caprice limited to police/fleet sales, a detective trim makes little sense… because, well, any crook worth their salt would know to spot one from a mile away. Someone looking to go undercover would be better off in an Impala… or, well, anything but a current-gen Caprice.

    1. CHRISTOPHER PRICE, 2014 CHEVROLET SS IS THE CIVILIAN EQUIVILANT! NOT LIMITED TO POLICE/FLEET ANYMORE AND THIS MEANS LOWER COST OF REPLACEMENT PARTS OR MAJOR REPAIR FOR POLICE VEHICLES I AM SURE.

      1. Rick, the problem is the SS doesn’t come in V6 or base V8 trims. It is priced to be so low volume, a used Cadillac CTS-V sportwagon seems like a modest upgrade.

  5. Does anyone know how many of these PPV’s (all models) GM has sold? Gotta say I’ve never seen one on the road!

    3. I see them all the time in Broward County, Florida. The Lauderhill Police Dept has some of them.

    4. I know that Plainfield (IL) PD has one, seen it a few times.

  7. We have a couple around here but they are too expensive for most departments that have been getting better deals on Chryslers and some Ford. Also the Import clause hurt sales with other departments that are not permitted to buy a import unless it is from North America.

To be honest they are not wretched but they are not the best looking Police cars GM has ever had. They look big in the back and the front fenders flair out oddly in the front. Add the base trim and it makes for a not too impressive car in styling. Like I said not horrid but not their best effort.

    1. The PPV uses the VE Commodore Omega’s front bumper too which doesn’t suit the Caprice. The Holden Caprice front looks way nicer.

  8. We have some here in north Georgia , but not as many as there should be, by now. Chevrolet is losing sales due to slow and drawn out delivery times. This is in part due to the fact that they are being built outside this country. Come on GM decision makers , it’s time to get this right. You’re losing sales because departments can’t wait 6-8 months for delivery. There is a an idle plant in Georgia that could be retooled and reopened to build this fine police vehicle >> Doraville . This would fix two issues . This is a great product, that most who test, like and want. Please don’t botch this up .

    1. There just isn’t enough demand on its own. Before bankruptcy, the plan was to have a domestic Zeta plant for G8/GTO, Impala/Caprice PPV.

We need to get back there.
